My father had a dark green metallic 1974 Comet. It came with the larger 250 cubic inch inline 6, good for 88 horses, IIRC. We had it from 1975 to 1978 when my father gave it to my grandfather to make room for our 1979 Buick Century wagon. My grandfather kept the Comet on the road another 10 years or so before the tin worm finally took its toll.
I got a chance to drive it after I got my license. It's most remarkable trait was how unremarkable it was. It wasn't particularly fast or agile, but it wasn't slow or cumbersome, either. It wasn't the most economical car, but it wasn't a gas guzzler. It wasn't great looking, but wasn't hideous either. If there ever was a car that truly personified being average, it was the 1970s Maverick / Comet .
