Mattress Warranty ARGH

I go to Sears and pick out a Beautyrest pillow top mattress and box spring. Ask about warranty if sags etc, told no problem 20 year warranty. Who uses warranty anyway, had old bed 18 years. After 9 months sags and dips, discomfort to the point of lost sleep. Go to Sears and was told sorry you must go thru manufacturer warranty. Send required photos of string across the mattress to measure dip depth and letter. They reply with number to call. I call.

Them: you need more photos showing required 1 1/2” depth which is industry standard
Me: it doesn’t measure 1 1/2” but I am not happy
Them: sorry doesn’t qualify for warranty
Me: bed stinks, I can’t stand it, it is uncomfortable
Them: comfort isn’t a warranty claim
Me: isn’t comfort the purpose of a mattress
Repeat conversation several times
Them: ok I give, I will do you a big favor and replace mattress
Me: not acceptable, we will be having this same conversation in a few months
Them: best I can do
Repeat conversation several times
Me: I will spend more money just give me a credit
Them: no can do
Repeat conversation several times
Me: so your saying Sears doesn’t stand behind their products
Them: it’s a manufacturer warranty
Me: not acceptable
Repeat conversation several times
Them, ok fine, credit it is.

After much to much research pick out a different mattress w/o box spring for more money from what I learned is a poor, overpriced selection.. Much to my surprise they accept. Ordered elsewhere platform frame to replace box spring and topper for comfort on a too firm ultra firm mattress that should last better. In the end I spent a few hundred more $’s and would do it different if starting from scratch but at least not stuck with throwing out mattress and spending even more.

So being obstinate, not my nature but my back hurts and I’m tired, has a new mattress on they way. Thanks for listening, I feel better already.

Richard - what a story. Glad things improved finally.

In my case, best mattress I ever got was a "tempurpedic"-like mattress about ten years ago. Really improved the sleep situation. Sleep greatly improved, back aches disappeared, etc.

Mattresses have to be the worst things in the world to buy... you will probably own them longer than most purchases and spend 1/3 of your life on the yet you get the least opportunity to "test drive" it to decide if it's the right one for you. Heck, you have more info when you pick out sneakers than you have for a mattress!

I should share this site: https://www.themattressunderground.com . Most sites I looked at were sellers. This is not. They do have several smaller manufacturers who belong and they encourage that direction. The site has much info on what to look for with specifics but they don't tell you what to get, just supply information to make an educated choice for the feel you like. I made my second decision from reading their basic info and searching the forum. The big 3 manufacturers (all start with S) really won't tell you what is in their product with any detail. The smaller ones will and appear to produce better products at lower prices and you know what your getting. NFI but next time I will go there first.

Richard- Had a problem with our 8 yr old mattress.
Contacted our seller locally.
They told me what to do similar as you did
Sent them in 2 weeks later someone came out to verify.
2 weeks later had a brand new one and they upgraded us to a Posturepedic.

Don, good for you. I'm sure if we had used it longer it would have made the depth. Many complaints on net of people who were denied claims and just threw them out. We also ended up with a Sealy from the choices we had, Sterns and Foster supposedly one of their premium labels (I am not recommending.) Mattress alone was $300 more than the Simmons set that was $1200 plus latex topper will be $300-400 but I'm confident our new set up will feel better, last longer and be worth the $.
Billy, maybe use it for a trampoline for a while.
Enough about mattresses, beautiful fall day, went cruising in the TR for most of it.

the irony of the whole deal, getting screwed on a mattress....
