I bought a rebuild kit and after pulling it from the car I realized there is nothing to rebuild??? the kit came with a bunch of gaskets but all that applied to mine was the retaining clip where the piston goes in, the rubber boot and a new gasket for the cap. am I missing something?

The rebuild kit should have also come with 2 rubber seals - one for the piston and a smaller one that goes at the end of the assembly to seal off the reservoir.

The 2 seals mentioned are marked with red arrows in this tantalizingly out-of-focus diagram:
Those seal are the essence of the rebuild, everything else is more or less cosmetic or there if you break the old one.
One seal is about the diameter of a penny and maybe 3/16" thick... the other is small, about the size of a collar button.

Check out Tom's posts on taking apart and reassembling the clutch master cylinder for a TR4A. The brake master cylinder is exactly the same - just has a larger reservoir.

Oh yes, and if you do not have a factory workshop manual you need to get one ASAP.
TR4/4A Factory Workshop Manual
It has a great cutout diagram of the brake master cylinder and a good description on dismantling it (see below).
"2. Shake out the plunger, spring and valve assembly. If necessary, apply low pressure compressed air to the outlet union to eject the plunger assembly."
I'd also recommend getting the following manuals which can give you alternate takes on how to do things, but if you can only get one make it the factory manual as it is really excellent and easy to follow.

I've never had one just shake out... or much success slapping it against a piece of wood, so I reach for the air gun from the get-go. I use a towel around the end where the piston will be coming out as (even with low pressure) when that thing starts to move it may pop out with some force.
