Master Cylinder Questions

Hello everyone. Just purchased a 1972 midget that had been sitting for years. Got it running ok but I was looking for tips on the easiest way to remove the two master cylinders. It looks tight and know you experienced guys must have some good ideas. thanks

Welcome aboard! Those nuts are not very convenient to get to, I'll agree. I've had to use a combination wrench, sometimes turning the open end at a 90 degree angle and turning it like a screwdriver. I've wondered if a crow's foot would work, but I never had a set to try with.

Be careful if you decide to use some PB Blaster or penetrating oil on them, the rubber parts of the brake cylinder won't like it, so try to keep it out of the master cylinder bores.

I think those particular nuts left me wondering why BL just had to weld those studs on and not use bolts that you could get to the heads easily from inside the pedal box.

Hi Whitey,

I recently repainted that portion of my inner fender, and replaced my clutch master.

I personally found it easier to unscrew the whole bracket where it meets the inner fender. Complete removal requires disassembly of the pedal ass'y (two cotter pins) but just unscrewing the bracket allows a few inches of movement, which can provide much-needed access to those lower MC bolts. (See pictures in my thread, below)

My two cents... Your mileage may vary!
