Master Cyl Leaking ....

Hi All:

I recently replaced my master cylinder in July and it's leaking already. Filled with DOT 3 (old can).

The question I have -- did I do something wrong with respects of fluid type or was this sitting on someone else's shelf too darn long (quite likely).

Also - rebuilding this? Difficult or easy?

Did you replace it with a new unit or another old one. If new, I'd just order a rebuild kit. They are simple to rebuild. If it's old perhaps the bores are pitted and need re-sleeving. If so, send it to Gerard and he'll fix you up: www.gerardsgarage.com Old DOT3 fluid used to eat the natural rubber seals in British brake systems, but they don't use those seals anymore and new DOT3 is compatabile: https://www.mossmotors.com/SiteGraphics/Pages/Brake_Fluid/brake_fluid_long.html I suppose if you had a NOS M/C and an old can of DOT3 you might have created a perfect storm.

Thanks for the recommendation Rick.

The fact is, the repop/aftermarket units, especially the cheaper ones, tend to develop leaks, sometimes as soon as 6 months, and rebuilding an OEM Lockheed with new seals is also a short term solution. The sleeved units I can provide will outlast any other option by tenfold. I have in fact, sleeved many of the aftermarket units that were essentially new because they leaked within a very short period of time. In over ten years, I have yet to hear from someone that wasn't 110% satisfied with their reconditioned master cylinder. They come back better than new. I've had them in a variety of my own cars for over 20 years without a rebuild.

If you purchase you master from someone like Moss or VB it should be a TRW/Lucas which will have a full replacement warranty.

To avoid any compatibility problems I stick with Dot 4 LMA fluid.
