Mark 2 - The fastest "thing" on the planet?

Graham Lyons

I've heard of a claim, probably an advertising slogan, made for the Mk 2 that it was the fastest "something" on the planet. Presumably it would have been close to being the fastest production saloon. Anyone got a source for this?

Yeah Graham, that was the other Lyons claim,"fastest production saloon", and is repeated by most Jag book authors when discusing ; the MK11 Saloon. But they were very heavily campagined in England at that time. Most of the time however they were challenging themselves and Lyons would not let a Daimler V8 compete against them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif---Keoke

I've heard it said that the V8 250 couldn't pull a sick girl off a chair. Of course, I wouldn't say that! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Graham, Don't believe everthing you hear.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif P.S.a 250V8 and A V8250 are slightly different animals. OH! Maybe they confused the 250 with the Jag 240 with an autobox. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Maybe so, Keoke. They certainly sound nice. My book says the spec. 2.5L V8 puts out 140 bhp and that my 3.4L XK puts out 210 bhp and I just assumed the 3.4L had more power. Silly me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Maybe he meant the Daimler 4.5 litre? Despite the bodies it wore, that was a significant engine.
210 from a 3.4? Claimed, maybe, but gross BHP and short-legged dobbins at that.
I think the fastest saloon claim might have been justified with some of the "warmer" 3.8s

I didn't know they fitted the 4.5L Daimler engine in the Mark 2 body, Roger. It would have been a potent beast, no doubt. I didn't really want to get into a "mine is bigger than yours" discussion. I really wanted a reference to the source of the original claim.

No, the 4.5 didn't go into a Mark 2, but it was plenty quick in the limos it did inhabit! Quicker than a Mark II? Maybe, but Lyons didn't let it happen so we won't know.

Hi Roger, Just think ,if the XJ6 had of came on the scene with the 4.5 Ltr Hemi V8 Maybe ford would not own Jaguar now .Bad Mgmt decisions. Also the Majestic Major sported the 4.5 engine, some 2.5's have been lumped with 4.5s and as they say acros the pond they are real goers!---Keoke

Hello all,
The 2.5 V8 Daimler may have a marginal performance advantage over the 2.4 Mk 2, but that really is not saying a lot. The other disadvantage of the Daimler is that the majority were made with automaiic transmission. It certainly is a good engine, however and the 4.5 litre version in the Majestic Major certainly gave that very large car a respectable performance but not approching the 3.8 Mk 2 or probably even the 3.4 version. I can't think, offhand, of any quicker 4\5 seat saloon that could match the 3.8 Mk 2 when they were first introduced.

Hi Piman, Did you tell Russ Carpenter that???---Keoke

Hello Keoke,

No I didn't as I do not know him.
Would you please explain?

Alec /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

Alec, Russ ran a dragster in the UK using the 2.5LTr V8 developing better than 1000 BHP Held the european record for some time until US V8 cars showed up. I have lost his website or I would give it to you-Regards Keoke To the best of my knowledge now he is the authority on tuning the Daimler V8 in the UK.

Hello Keoke,
thank you for that, not following that particular branch of motor sport I had not heard of him. I know the V8 Daimler engine is a good piece of engineering. I remember a racer of the sixties (Peter Westbury maybe?) transplanted a Daimler V8 2.5 into his Bedford TK car transporter, apparently that went well for a truck.
I wonder if people remember that the Mk 2 Jaguar has been around for 45 years or so and my performance comments were relative to the launch date. (Perhaps I ought to mention that I am (slowly) restoring my MK 2 3.8)

regards,

Alec /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif
