Manifold studs

OK, back to the basics for me. I purchased a stud, nut, and washer kit to replace all of the worn out manifold hardware. One stud came out with finger power and the next was not the case. I've used the double nut (steel) method and I can't get a bite on the stud. I can get to it with various wrenches, but I'm pretty nervous about screwing up the head. There are only a couple of suspect studs that NEED replacing from the looks of things, but you never know, I just don't want to make the situation worse. What to do? Also, is the 1098 manifold gasket and the 1275 manifold gasket the same? The one that was on the 1275 engine tore a bit while removing the headers and I have an extra set marked 1962-1966. When I hold them together I can't tell any difference.
Thanks, Rut

Gaskets are the same.

Try some PB on the Stud, then try again another day. YMMV

Good luck-Steve

Hot Tip....use Anti-Seize when you install the new ones!

Steve, can I post date your remarks to the PO? Oh wait, we don't have a time machine here do we? Anti-seize and PB Blaster it is!
Thanks, Rut

I have found a good set of vise grips works the best, the double nut idea the worst. Some heat with a propane torch directed just on the stud will do the trick if the PB blaster will not. Remember, work the stud both way, and try to tighten first, with just small back and forth rotations. If you just grab it and turn, it is sure to break off. Years ago I did a ton of exhaust studs with a torch and a set of vise grips. Worked everytime.

For six bucks you can buy a stud puller from Harbor Freight.

BTW, what's the best gasket sealer to use on the new manifold gasket?
Thanks again, Rut

I was hoping you would say that. Since this is a 1275 do I need to use the inlet manifold ferrule or is that earlier engines? They are not there now.
Thanks, Rut

Depends, does your head and intake manifold have them (BOTH)? If so use them.

In the past, I have modified both sides of the JOINT and Pinned the manifold to the Head to make sure that they are perfect!

Lots of work for a minimal HP increase at warp six (6) Scotty. YMMV
