Man banging on cockpit door

Did you all hear about the man who tried to storm the cockpit door on a flight from Chicago to San Francisco (American Airlines)? This was on Mother's Day. Crew and other passengers subdued him. I suspect most have heard about this incident and that this guy had a passport from Yemen. I wonder, however, how many of you knew the guy was shouting Allahu Akbar as he stormed the cockpit door? Did your news network of choice tell you this, or did you get the PC version that only told you he was yelling, but not WHAT he was yelling? Scary stuff.

I made a wild assumption on hearing of his passport origin. Turns out my intuition ain't all that bad.

Professionals were there. He IS lucky.

I like your new avatar Basil.... there's a new tough kid on the block :jester:

Thank goodness they nailed him.

Which brings up the question: what would YOU do if some nutball endangered the plane or started threatening folks or acting crazy? I remember some people resolving after the 9/11 plane hijackings that that they wouldn't ever again hesitate to jump up and nail anyone who was endangering the plane. I recall many conversations about doing this after the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

I tend to agree. But, it's easy to say that you'd get up and pound the nutball to the floor, but actually doing it? What would you do?

I think if it was a clear scenario where we were endangered, I'd act. I'd be more inclined to act if others decided to, also. I've actually visualized doing it, but I don't know if I'd really do it. I'd like to think I would.

Again, easy to say . . . :yesnod:

What would do? I would hope that I would do whatever it takes to stop the SOB.
Since I like this place and don't feel it appropriate to put the link here, go to YouTube and lookup "Bat Day" by the "Kid from Brooklyn" if you really want to know what I think.
Be WARNED... there is lots of foul language.

Gonna be flyin' in to events now w/ the boss instead of ridin' on the truck. He has fractional ownership in a plane but sometimes flys commercial if it's too far.

That was in the article I read.

That's how I learned it too...not from any of the "news" networks.

It's a given he yelled out "Allahu Akbar" when storming the cockpit door. It has become the hip thing to say before performing some heinous act, when you've lost your mind.

Bat day anyone?

Again: He's ~lucky~ there were professionals nearby.

I really think the patience of the rank-and-file is running out.
This whacko could have been seriously injured if a couple retired LEO's were not present.

Interesting question. I suspect post 9/11 on a plane, anyone would jump the person given the already demonstrated alternative. That being said, there is some interesting research around (I read it in Malcolm Gladwell, either the Tipping Point or Blink) that says that the more people there are, the less likely anyone will act because everyone assumes someone else will. They did an experiment where they put a person then a few people then many people in a room and had smoke start to wisp under the door. The largest group was the least responsive. One of the implications of this was that people now suspect that no one called when Kitty Genovese (remember that) was being killed, not because people were uncaring but because too many people heard her scream and everyone assumed someone else had called the police.
