I recently purchased a mallory unilite distributor to replace my stock distributor on my 1979 MGB. I'm having difficulty installing it with a new drive dog. It doesn't want to fully seat. Has anyone had similar difficulty?
 
did you install the drive dog yourself? is it maybe too long? can you compare it to a Lucas unit?

Hi Chuck, thanks for the quick reply. To answer your questions...yes, I installed the new drive dog myself. Everything seems to match up fine, checked the dimensions and visually looks the same. The old drive dog looks a bit worn. I can install the old distributor with no problem. The only thing I can think of now is that maybe the retaining pin for the drive dog is too long. I tapped it through the shaft and there's just a hair protruding on either side. I'll try to file down and see if that helps.

Got it...I engaged the drive dog, tapped it in with a hammer until fully seated, then pulled the distributor out. The gouges on the drive dog showed me exactly where I needed to grind it down.

Is that Unilite with or without vacuum advance? If it's advance mechanism is centrifugal only, then you have a total of about 26 degrees advance
