Mallory Distributor

Okay guys - I have a 1960 A/H-3K (BT-7) that came with a modified Mallory. From the guy who put it together (and he does seem to know what he's doing), it WAS a dual point-set distributor that now uses only ONE set of (OEM Lucas) points and capacitor (sorry.. I'm an electronics guy- that's a condenser). I have a new set of everything inside, properly gapped and it DOES idle, BUT at higher RPMs, the engine pops, crackles, and snaps... almost as if it's trying to fire more than one jug at a time (no arcing from wires & good connections) Does ANYBODY know where I can buy new caps & rotors for the distributor? No labels, plaques, stickers, or writing on the unit to give a model number, but it DOES look EXACTLY like the other dual-point units that Mallory makes/made.

site won't come up, Dave. AND anybody know how to modify one's profile? This thing has me listed at Sedalia, MO, and I'm in Sedalia, CO

There should be an ID tag on the side. The first 2 numbers indicate the distributor series.

Mine is a 23 series I bought in 2000. There are two mechanical advance types, YL or YT, but I can't remember which mine is.
For mine, the cap part number is 270, and the rotor part number is 309. I never had any problems finding them in normal auto parts stores.
Googling should produce sources too.

I don't know if it still works, but the Mallory tech line I called in 2000 was 216-388-8300 x500.

Side notes:
They may have long since solved their problems, but back then they had miserable condensers (capacitors) that failed regularly - after several strandings at the side of the road and hot calls to the tech line, someone finally suggested I get any old Chev condenser since Mallory was having "supplier problems." I did, and never had another problem.

Also, after about 10 years of running the dual points, I bought a Pertronics unit for it and have no points or capacitor now.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Welcome to the Forum! You will find lots of advice here.

Please note that this thread is ~19 years old. Thanks for doing a search before posting, but the link is probably out of date, and unfortunately, Dave can no longer answer questions.

To change your profile, at the top is a drop-down menu labeled "Forum Actions". Under that you will find "Edit Profile" where you may change your location.

Mallory seems to change hands every so often and I believe Holley now owns it: https://www.holley.com/blog/post/mallory_unilite_distributors/

I still have the same Unilite on my car from when this thread was young and other than my having to replace the ballast about six months ago it has performed perfectly over the years, (probably because I carry a spare module onboard). I'd recommend the Unlite over the dual points system for all the usual reasons.
