Making Strombergs Richer

Thanks Richard, my plan had been to go to the earlier Strombergs because I don't want to mess with or worry about temperature compensators and such, and the adjustable jets give a greater range of adjustment than the adjustable needles. I will check to see if my carb has the idle trim screw and if it is closed.

But then I thought there might be an easier way.

Of interest I have a TR250, I have the later TR6 carbs (73, 3508 I think is the number) If I look at the needle on the chart I linked to above the TR250 needle is richer across the range than the later needle. I know it is basically the same motor (I think compression ratio was dropped at one time).

I am still exploring the needle swap concept if I can keep the information flow going from Burlen. But I also still like the idea of getting ealrier carbs, which I had on my 4A, and they gave me years of trouble free service (like it says in the article above).

This will surely rankle some, but you can disable the temp compensators by turning the adjustment screw all the way in so they don't open, and you can blank off the throttle by-pass with a solid gasket. I ended up doing both in order to get the idle down with triple Z-S's.

I just wanted to share the information I got from burlen in case anyone else is in the same boat.

"Dear Greg,

As I said we prefer not to advise on needles but I will offer two alternatives. Whether or not they will prove suitable is hard to judge.

The BIAR needle is richer than the BIAF with the BIAW falling somewhere in between the two.

The BIAR is part number B21848 at ÂŁ5.95 each, the BIAW is B20524 at ÂŁ5.95 each. All prices plus delivery and VAT.

Regards...."

I ordered the B1AR, will add the website price of these was higher than quoted, 10.95 pounds or so, about $17 at current exchange rates, cheap enough and easy enough to intall to experiement with.
