Major impact to the hobby

Fascinating! I have seen Jay Leno raving about it - he was making parts for a Duesy? figured it saved big bucks and big time.
 
One of the college Formula SAE teams has a body for their car that's made up of about a dozen 3D printed parts (glued together).

We have a MakerBot at work. Here it is printing part of a VW bus. We've also printed a statue of Yoda plus other crazy stuff:

 
As a total neophyte regarding 3D printing - don't you need a good "original" to copy? or a very good multi-view engineering drawing to scan first?
