M100 Elan misfire

Hi,

My M100 SE turbo has developed a fault. If it was any other car, I'd say that the engine sounds as though there's an ignition system fault or that the timing needs adjustment, or that there was something the matter with the fuel delivery.

However, after starting to examine the engine more closely, I was shocked to find, or more accurately, not to find, a distributor!!

The yellow engine fault light isn't on. When driving it's as though the engine runs fine for 1/2 second and then no power for 1/2 second and then power again, basically it's misfiring. The misfire happens at idle and at all speeds.

I did have previously have a fault with the cam angle sensor, which I re soldered a coulple of years ago, and its been fine since then and also, the engine warning lights not on, so I don't think it's that.

I've tried new plugs and HT leads.

I'd appreciate any suggestions, and also any insights about how the ignition system / injectors actually work.

Many Thanks

Will

OK, here's an update. I've fixed the misfire (A crack in the "Distributor" like object was causing piston 4 to have intermittent spark. I used silicone gel to seal the crack and the misfire has gone.

However, at some stage during the process I've caused the battery warning light to come on (This is due to the battery currently not charging, rather than the charge being low). I'm wondering if me testing the HT spark by pressing the HT leads to the cylinder head may have caused the alternator to be damaged?, or whether I've blown a fuse on the charging circuit.

So my question is: Does anyone know where the fuses for the alternator curcuit are?, or if I could have damaged the alternator, or disconnected something near where the "distributor" is (I've checked and I don't think I have)

THanks in advance Will
Serves me right for being good and trying to fix the bloody thing!
