	Thanks all for the links to the document and street wisdom. At last I think I understand what's going on. 
I find the info about the fatigue failure especially interesting. From the Clevite document, it seems that my rod bearings are failing that way too. Probably simple end-of-life.
Another item I intend to look up: In July, 1975, Scientific American had an extended article about journal bearings. (Amazing the stuff I remember for 30 years, yet I can't find my housekeys half the time.) Anyway, I found a reference to it, so I'll dig it out at the library. The technology has been around a long time, and probably is pretty stable. So I suspect that most of the info is still valid.
