Well I put Linux Mint in this baby computer and it is faster than before! It is now usable, as before it was so slow, it was a drag to use. Mint has everything I need in this and it hooks up to the wireless connection by it's self with no effort! I like the operating system as it's very user friendly, especally coming from Windows. It doesn't try to jam you with all kinds of internet junk every time you turn it on and that's a plus in it's own rite!
The screen is not much bigger than an ipad, but easy to get used to and great for carring around and so far it does everything windows does. The key pad is standard size just eliminating the side number panel.:highly_amused: PJ

Had to delete one post, as it registered twice.. Such is life.

Paul, I am thinking about installing Linux mint on my laptop that is running windows 7. It sounds like you are really enjoying it, would you recommend it?

Walter, I'm on the little 205 now making sure everything is running properly. It's a Toshiba NB 205, a cool looking little thing, but their known for being the slowest computer you could possibly buy! Too late after you spent your money to buy it. The processor in it is too weak and why Toshiba let this on the market with it's weak processor I'll never know. It came with Windows 7 starter. So, I shoved it in a drawer and let it lay. After installing Linux Mint in the desktop and found out how nice it was, I figured I'd try it in this little 205 and boy was I surprised! It doubbled it's speed! The program still uses the Linux format, but it's easy for a Windows user to convert over. In other words, you don't have to learn a bunch of Linux language to run it! It's pretty much a push button program. You can download it for free, (Linux Mint 16), burn it to a disk and install it in your computer. It gives you the option to install alongside of another Op system, resize the partitions, (very easy) or remove the other Op system and install it all by it's self! Pretty cool setup. I'd give it a try, if you don't like it you can always revert back to your original programming, with a restore disk of course. I'm just amazed how it speeded up this little 205. Nice. PJ

I have a trim version of CEntOS on an OLD IBM ThinkPad T40 and use it with regularity as my "traveling" machine. It'll do everything I need and nothing I don't. Faster than the Win install by a factor of tens.

Mint is Linux for end users who don't want to burden themselves with learning the Linux kernel and just want to "get on with it!" The developers of Mint have done a great job.

Don't fear the Penguin!!!

I gotta say, I haven't figured out how to get Fedora to see my phone as a storage device when I USB it. I'd love to be able to transfer stuff from the Galaxy in a non-klunky way.

Greg; Without a Galaxy to experiment with, I can't offer certainty but will ask someone using one to trot it and a cord to the hovel and plug it into this CEntOS box... I have the feeling it'll be recognized. Fedora is trimmed down to be more efficient/convenient for everyday use. Have you updated to the latest Fedora kernel?

No update for a while, still running FC17. Need to do a backup and upgrade but wanted to wait for taxes to be done. Now I'm in the middle of a job and just don't have the time.

P.S. Where are my manners! I appreciate the offer.

Greg - there's an interesting thread on this, USB on F17 and a Galaxy:

https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=284741

I don't know which Galaxy you're using, but one issue seems to be that the phone defaults to MTP mode. One guy solved the problem by installing:

sudo yum install gvfs-mtp

Hope this helps.
Tom

Thanks Tom. I did a search a while back but didn't see that thread. I do have the S3 so I'll give it a go soon.

I only found one problem and I'M sure I get the drift of that when I get the time. I understand that I need to install Wine to play some older windows software, mainly my old Myst game. I don't normally play games, but I really like that game, it surly tests your memory all the time. They never upgraded Myst to play on newer Op systems, but should run on Linux using Wine. Any tips on this? PJ

Well, I took the dive and installed Linux Mint with 64 bit Cinnamon. So far seems pretty good, faster and just as convienent as Windows 7.

Paul - just fyi - Myst online isn't downloaded. You play it "live" using your browser.

Save you some unnecessary headaches!

Tom

Thanks Tom, but why did it take 30 minutes to download? It still doesn't show up in the programs or desk top. Bottom line, it doesn't work, no idea why. ??? PJ

Paul - I assume you just downloaded the Myst installer. You still play the game online.

You need to run the installer program you downloaded.
