I want to rebuild the air pump. The bearings are in good shape. Just need cleaning and relubeing. The pump looks like it is in pretty good overall shape. Is there a rebuild kit I can buy? There are two parts that need replacing. One of the four steel guides and a missing guide tension spring. The rest of the pump is in good shape. Any thoughts on this? PS; The pump model is (APIF). Number on the pump is )7351D). It's for a 72 "B" and is the original pump. It was made under Lucas Licence by, Hitachi in Japan.PJ

Only thing I know to replace inside is the bearing...don't think anybody sells a kit or anything...just take your old bearing down to the local electrical machine shop where you get alternators rebuilt - they'll probably have the bearing....maybe somebody else knows more about them

hmmmm.... never thought about rebuilding one, personally. However, since my smog pump is no longer pumping anything but the pulley still spins freely, rebuilding doesn't sound like a bad idea. However, I don't think I've ever seen a smog pump rebuild kit anywhere...

On the other hand, it's just soooo much easier to replace it than to rebuild it, and major parts suppliers can get you reman'ed units at a decent price even if you have to wait for it to be delivered to the store.

I believe there is a firm up in Wisconsin that specializes in this service.

Rick/Tony, If this Co. could sell me the parts that I need to rebuild the pump, that would be great as I have all the tools, hyd. press etc to remove the shaft. I'll ask Dick - but I think what he does is rebuild them, put 'em on a shelf, & swap out for your old ones

Aren't there some sort of fins inside the unit that wears as well?

Believe it or not Rick, the pumps internals are of a fairly basic design. With the proper parts, it's an easy rebuild. The main problem that could be encountered is the removal and replacing of the drive shaft, as it has to be pressed off and pressed back on after replacing the front bearing. A small hydraulic press solves this problem. PJ

Talked with Dick Luening last night...he said for $75 he rebuilds everything inside (& outside) to include 'easing' the vanes a bit to give more clearance (main problem inside them)....I'm sending him 4 to have built..will have them on shelf for resale if anybody needs one.....however, you can get them for the same $75 directly from him - I'm just going to keep them as a service (plus, I fried the one on my '79 back in Canada while soaking at Laiird Hot Springs.

Oh, Dick said to hold them up & shake them...if black dust pours out, toss it in the trash - its too far gone to rebuild.
