I need a new distributor for my TR3a. Is a lucas 25d distributor from a later car eg MGB late sixties the same as a one used on a pos ground 59 TR3a?

Thanks
Paul

If no one answers here, contact Jeff at Advanced Distributors. He'll know exactly what will work in there. Maybe yours can be fixed?

I'm not a distributor expert by any means, but I wanted to point out that although a bunch of Lucas distributors can be bolt on exchanges, there are likely differences between MGB and a TR3a - advance curve most likely a good example. I don't think positive or negative ground would be an issue though.

Just to illustrate the variations, there is a nifty database out there showing various distributor configurations:

Given the complexity if I were experimenting I'd stick with something like a TR4 donor distributor.

Unfortunately, the old distributor was not with the car . I may go with a new electronic unit from Moss etc. My uncle will be here in a few days to begin rebuilding the motor, so I'll need something in a week or so to test it when he is done. I do have my 49 TR distributor which should work to test it if we can not get one.

Thanks for the info Randy. Number overload!

Used ones show up for sale on flea-bay all the time for not much $$. You can then either recondition it yourself, or send it off to someone like Jeff.

I'm pretty sure the driving dog is different between TR and MGB, even though the remainder of the dizzy is a bolt-on. The MG also takes a different cap, though it will work on a TR if you get wires with matching terminals.

I just happen to have a spare dist, It came from a 58 {maybe late 57} Tr-3-a
I say that because of the way these cars were titled.
Example my 56 was titled as a 57 because that was when it was sold but it was clearly manufactured in 56.
You want it? Make me an offer *SMILE*
I don`t know what the #`s are on it but I could go look sometime tomorrow .
