Lotus S_2 Interior Jigsaw

I'm starting a new post rather than getting the MT75 way off topic. My biggest hurdle with my S2 is getting the interior set up properly. With all of my local S2 contacts having their cars apart as well, I've got nothing to go on.

If anyone has closeup shots of the process of putting their interior together, it would be really helpful! Especially the door assembly and the little bits of metalic trim (e.g. on the top of the "U" shaped panel that surrounds the door opening) and where to find the stuff.

Also, where there trim pieces on the door sills themselves?

Thanks for all suggestions and pics.

Darren

S-2 ~Elan~ here, right? (as opposed to an S-2 Esprit, Elite, etc.)

The trim at the tops of the doors where the window channels are? Mine is an S-3, it's been two decades since I disassembled/reassembled an S-2 so not sure where your question is going. If you post photos of the "bits 'n pieces" it may jog my memories, tho. Have you any literature as reference? Manuals? Here's the parts book illustration of your door. Please copy it, as I will not leave it up on my site long.

I was wondering which S-2 also??? There are a few.

It's an Elan, Kenny... I checked his profile /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The chrome strips on the top of the door for the window seal are no longer available.. I've looked everywhere for them. You can get the cat hair strips, but you'll have to make the metal part. Aluminum should work fine. I haven't done that yet, but am thinking about it. Dave Bean should be carrying the window handles as reproductions by about now if you need those.

I used all GFI fiberglass interior panels for mine, and they turned out really slick. I have only about two square feet of carpet to get wet, and I could live without even that! It totally updated the car, but maintains the simple and spartan feel. If you want to know more, then e-mail me and I'll flip you out some pics etc.

I'd like to see that too... Post a photo here? Sounds like you replicated the S-3 inner panels?

I thought only the S3 & S4 had the chrome trim around the top of the windows and earlier versions didn't???

Right, Craig. The S-1 & S-2's had a small chromed lift "handle" at the top in the center. #10 in the illustration above. No chrome surround. That was for the electric window'd doors on the later cars.

Are those window handles the ones that attach through the glass? I'm missing one of those and wasn't aware they were still available.

Thanks for the diagram by the way. I had a local fabricator make the strips for the top of the inner pannel and door out of stainless. It's not square at the top, but rounded. It's the best I could do. I got Baltic aviation plywood to make my panels, but haven't cut them out yet.

I'll post pictures with my additional questions over the weekend.

Enjoy Friday!

Kewl. I can use the "inspiration" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, I"m attaching a link where I've put a couple of pictures. My questions are: 1) are there sill plates on the S2 or even later Elans? (I have to cover scratches) 2) Is there some type of trim piece that runs along the top of this panel?

Link is as follows:

Thanks!
Darren

I don't believe there was a threshold plate on Elans originally, the inner door panels were covered with upholstery material. A chromed "cap" at the top. No bottom trim piece to my recollection... I can't be trusted tho: my "recollection" is a bit *rusty* /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mebbe someone with an S-2 will chime in here.

Regarding the strips along the top of the doors that have the fuzzy wipes attached to them: How are they held on the door. Looks like there is a hole for a screw at the back of the door, but that's the only attachment point I can see. Glue?

IIRC there are a series of spring steel clips to hold it against the outer lip of the door. A modified "U" shape about 3/4" long, with "teeth". I remember LOTS of them on there. Book says 10 per side, with NO illustration. Sorry.
