Lots of numbers on the Crown and Pinon pumpkin!

I pulled the pumpkin with some hints from Keoke. I can feel the play in the system. So now to accumulate parts. But, there is also lots of stampings in the differential that must have a story.
MOWAG ATC 7183-11/43 is the gear ratio 3.9
The Crown is marked 819 007
Pinion 819 Hey they match!

One Bearing side is marked A +1, the other is B+2

The number 72 is stamped in a few places inside.

Any good interpreters out there for all the numbers?
Someone told me that the bearings rarely wear out. How do you test?

Jerry, the shop manual gives very good directions on how to set up the gears and how to apply those numbers. Section 'J'. But in setting the initial pinion depth the manual of course directs you to use the original factory setting block and gauges. Which is something that probably no one has. Today most gears are set up by just "running the pattern". But I have to tell you from some acute experience, if your gears are smooth and quiet...don't touch them. These Healey rear ends are extremely strong and will run forever if not messed with. The ring & pinion must have some backlash. And the manual will tell you that the backlash, measured with a dial indicator, is stamped on the back of the ring gear. I have seen some ring gears that have no markings on them. So at that point your on your own. Then you just keep shimming until you have the best teeth mesh pattern in which you will never know for sure except from alot of experience. Hence if quiet, don't touch them.
Good Luck, Dave.

Thanks Dave, I will look for the backlash number. I do have a loud clunk from the differential right now so that is why I took it apart. I did note that the manual only has the preload number for the pinion gear. I have a dial indicator, but at this point , not a dial indicator for the pinion gear setting.

If you put engineers blue on the ring gear and rotate it in its housing you can see the mesh pattern . then play with the shimming to change the mesh pattern .
