This afternoon I downloaded 52 photo's from my digital camera to my computer.... After they were downloaded to my desktop I decided to delete them from the photo program on my desktop and keep them on my camera. I hit the "delete" button and they were gone from my computer. I then went to my camera and THEY WERE DELETED FROM THERE ALSO!!
My next place to check was my "Recycle Bin"; but they were NOT THERE EITHER!
These were photo's from my recent trip to New Zealand and Australia and I was sick about it.
Here's the good news... I found a program called RECUVA
https://www.piriform.com/recuva
I cabled my digital camera to my desktop and scanned the camera SD card and sure enough the RECUVA program somehow located the deleted files off of the SD card and now I have them back.
Just passing this program along in case anyone needs it one day. It will scan your drives for any deleted files, then lets you choose the ones you want to save.
Hope you never need it but just in case......

hmmm - weren't the deleted files in the Trash/Recycle Bin on the chip and/or the Photo program?

(when you delete a file, you're actually just deleting the file's name from the disk index - all the data remains, unless it's over written by adding more files)

The first place I checked was the "recycle bin" on my desktop and they were not there at all. I turned on my digital camera and it said "No pictures to play".
The only way I found them was by scanning the micro disk in the camera.
How do you get to the "recycled bin" on the camera chip?

I have found that memory cards and thumb drives don't use a recycle bin in windows. They just delete since the drive is so small.

That's what I figured as well Greg. I guess they must be stored somewhere on the SD card since the Recuva program extracted them.

Is there a way to get deleted files off the SD card without the Recuva program?

Don't put too much faith in Recuva. I've tried using it several times and did a half dozen controlled tests of its capabilities and found it sadly deficient on many types of files. I prefer "Glary Undelete" and "Pandora Recovery" to Recuva.

Unless you actually overwrite the data on a card, drive etc. it's still right where it was when you "deleted" it. The system has simply given permission for that segment of the drive to be used to store new data. Any data recovery app will recover it until it's wiped or overwritten.

Good info, thanks!

Elliot - see if you can show hidden files and folders in your File Manager. Most systems default to *not* showing hidden stuff. That's how I discovered the "hidden" deleted folder on flash drives. You might find something similar on your camera card, if Windows can mount/open the camera as a storage device (not just a camera).

Anyway, something to experiment with.

Tom

Glad you were able to recover those photos! That would have stunk to have lost photos from such an incredible trip! Now that you have them back - BACK THEM UP!!!

Bas-
Those were the very words I said to my
wife after I got them back.

Tom- will try to see if I can see the files on the card.
