Losing my wisdom today [at the oral surgeon]

Yup, at the ripe old age of 39 I'm having my wisdom teeth removed. They've not been an issue for me before now, so I always went with the if-it's-not-broken-don't-fix-it policy. Then a couple weeks ago they did start bothering a bit, so I made the phone call. Go in at 2 pm local time to get all four pulled.

We've got ice and mashed potatoes ready to go, along with a borrowed iPad and some books for entertainment. I'm off work this weekend (I get a few days off while school is on Spring Break) so I've got four days to get back to working shape.

So in a few hours I'll be four teeth stupider.

All at the same time?!?!

YEEOOOWW!!!

We'll catch up with ya in a few days, Drew.

Mine were stretched out over 37 years. First and last were......bad. Hope they don't A) use a "star" drill chisel to break it out (first one, VA Trainee Dentist), or B) take over two hours with an oral surgeon (who teaches at the State University) who finally went on-line and found a Brit study that showed if you grind it down below the gum line and stitch over it, it's fine.

Have Fun!

Had all 4 of mine out at 19.
Be prepared for a multi-day bit of discomfort... but, this depends on how they're in there (and how tough they are to remove). Impacted ones can be subborn.
Best of luck! :yesnod:

All at once is a good idea. Mine didn;t hurt I just felt like crap for a week afterwards.

Being a dentist I can commiserate with you from a different perspective. Getting them all at one visit is a much better way to go; get sedated once(which is the big risk) and only have one recovery period. Be sure to follow the post-operative instructions carefully and recovery will generally go better. the big three: NO SMOKING for 48 hours; NO drinking through a straw; NO drinking of carbonated beverages.(24 hours, preferably 48). good Luck

David

I should add, avoid sugar for as long as you can: I am not sure why, but avoiding sugar actually before surgery for a couple of days and afterward for a few days seems to lessen the severity of recovery.

I'd never want to go through that again! Head swelled up and looked like a flesh-colored pumpkin. Face and lips were numb for about 3 weeks afterward. :cryin:

Back at home now, all done. Wound up just taking two of them, lower right and upper left. Surgeon said that the other two were covered over an unlikely to ever cause me issues so I went with that recommendation. Bottom right was always my problem one anyways.

So now we're following the recovery orders. Good thing my wife was present when I woke up, as I was apparently somewhat present but don't remember any of it. No stomach issues, just now waiting for Jenny to get back from the store with my meds. Onward we press...

Guess I'm out of luck in the built-in wisdom dep't. I only had/have one wisdom tooth, and it's tucked away and not causing any problems, according to my dentist. He's keeping an "eye" on it, but said it's best to leave well enough alone.

No argument from me!

:eeek: I had all mine painfully broken into pieces and then viciously dug out by a crazed fiend. Excruciating.

When I was 17 my dentist told me to have all 4 removed. Waited till I was 52, Then had 2 removed. I think I'll wait another 35 years for the other 2.

I had all four out at 18. Piece of cake.

OK! Lets make this a contest. Had my 4 out at 15. Came home and ate 7 bowls of my mothers homemade veggie soup, made from G-mothers home canned soup stock. Best meal I have ever had.

And the meal didn't hurt my recovery a bit.

I still have mine,
Gee, I wonder if I'm any smarter?

Drew, you feel the loss of any wisdom?

Did it affect your playing ability?

Do you have phantom pains where they existed?

Do you feel a gig coming on?

Speedy recovery Drew!

I was in the Air Force but unfortunately I was stationed a Ft. George G. Meade in MD when mine were taken out (age 20). An Army Doc insisted all 4 were coming out and he didn't much care how I felt about it (I was opposed). So I go along like a good E1 does. I remember the Doc was annoyed that his intended dose of sedative didn't work so he hit me with more. Lights out that time. Post Op I kept fading in and out of consciousness while 3 nurses kept shaking me and yelling at me not to close my eyes. I don't remember how many times they tried to stand me up, but they kept trying to get me to my feet over and over. I just couldn't stand up. I remember thinking; why do they look so worried? Why can't I just sleep here for a while? According to my record it was 1 hour and 45 minutes that they kept that up. I eventually shuffled out and in that totally hazed state they give me a bottle of Percocet and a bottle of Acetaminophen. I'm still so messed up I can barely understand what they are telling me, but what's in one bottle is for now, the other for later tomorrow bla bla bla. My ride drops me off at my room and I start taking the Percocet - like I think they told me. 2 every 4-6 hours. Evidently I barely survived the procedure and then I nearly kill myself taking the wrong pills. I'm out for so long that I miss my follow up appointment and get in trouble for that. Then they find out I took all the Percs and try to make an issue out of that. The only thing that saved my butt was that one of the nurses who tended to me post procedure was somebody important who was visiting/observing and she was not pleased with how things went. All in all not a great experience. From that point on I drove down to Andrews AFB for ALL my dental/medical appointments. Thats my story. :thirsty:

Woke up? I just had local. It didn't hurt at all. Then again, I've always been told by dentist I have a high tolerance for pain...which makes you wonder...were they trying to hurt me??? :eeek:

"How 'bout now, can you feel ~this~?

I had a local when my two came out though i realize there is a difference between impacted and what I had. That said, i no longer get freezing for cavities. The bit of drilling pain is less than the pain of the needle and I hate the feeling of freezing.

Don't feel any stupider yet. Do have an option for a gig on Saturday, now that you mention it, but I'll probably pass this time. So far the recovery has been smooth, no issues yet. I'm good at following doc orders.

I opted to go somewhere else during the procedure, and came back when they were done. Not something I need to be present for. I'm good with anesthesia -- something I apperently told the nurse a few times as I was coming out of it. Good thing my wife was there to get the instructions, as I don't member any of them.
