I am not familiar with TR6 steering column, but going on general mechanical knowledge I would say you need to rebuild the steering column. It sounds like 1 or more bearings or sleeves has worn out. Get you a good TR6 manual and follow the instructions. This will help you more than we can.

Hoping someone out there can help me with my '75TR6...the steering feels nice and tight but the column does'nt.It can move laterally at least one-half to three-quarters of an inch within the dash face and it just ain't confidence-inspiring...

In my '70 the problem is in the rack. There are 2 brackets fastening to the body with rubber bushings which wear .They are cheap to replace and with aluminum very reliable. Try Moss motors

Richard,
Should be easy enough to check out. Have someone push back and forth on the steering wheel while you observe what is happening under the hood (bonnet). If all the play is from the rubber flex joint back to the steering wheel, then you need to get under the dash and check out the brackets securing the column. Believe it or not, a lot of sideways torque is put on this area over the years to get out of the car, especially if the repeat driver is a big person. Not that big a deal to pull all this down and fix it, refer to your Bentley manuel.
If the play comes from your rack, then the rack fell off! Seriously, if the steering is tight, unlikely that the bushes holding the rack down are that worn. Never did like aluminum brackets, transmits every road bump right to your hands.
