Doc,

The cap and wires were off in one picture. Maybe the distributor lead from the coil is loose? Loose lead wire in center electrode? Forget to put rotor back on?

Not that I've ever done anything like that.........yeah, right Paul. Maybe not more than five or ten times perhaps.

<span style="color: #990000">You were close Paul! A broken rotor was partly to blame. I replaced it.
The dizzy dog in my car is 180* out remember? That's why my dizzy plug wires were
in odd positions. In the middle of sleeping, it dawned on me, Jeff had reset my
dizzy to match my dog. Out of years of habit, I installed the plug wires in their
"Old" position on the dizzy.

Got up this morning at 4:30 to go fishing, rewired the dizzy plug leads. Car fired up
on very first crank. I was super tired and it was getting dark when I put the plugs
and wires back on yesterday. I guess some fine adjustment and I'm driving again.

A good morning omen for fishing.
thanks all,

Been there and done that! Before sending my dizzy off to Jeff I also had a spare with the drive dog out by 180 spent many hours trying to figure out what was wrong!

In deed a good omen!!

I caught two nice Tarpon this morning.
A beautiful day on the water here.

thanks everyone for your patience with
with this novice.

Wow!! is my right wrist black and blue from
smacking into the water pump while yanking on
the fan blades to move the valve springs up
and down!! Yes, I had the plugs out!
I'm just old, is all!!

best regards,

dale

Been there, done that. I found that it's much easier from the bottom, but you can't see the top. So you have to find a buddy that doesn't mind doing the dirty work.

If there's no blood or bruises, it ain't quite fixed Dale.

If that be the case, then my valve must be quite fixed!
Blood on the rockers is probably harmless, yes?

I'll crank the engine today and see if I get oil at
all the rockers. I sure hope I do.

thanks again.

It's gotta be better than with the old shaft. Don't look for too much oil on the ends, i.e. don't panic if you can't immediately see it ooozin' from 'em.

Some early systems were actually not covered and oil'd with a can, by hand as the journey progressed. It doesn't take a lot to keep the things wet.

So is it running?

Yes, indeed it is: as I write this note.
The car is warmed up, oil everywhere oil should be!!!!
Idles at 900 rpm but ONLY with choke out 3/4.
New rocker shaft made quite the difference to oil flow.

Backfires with choke in and gas pedal holding 1000 rpm.
I'll let it cool while I run errands and hit the valves,
carbs and timing to get it right.

What is causing the backfires?

best regards,

dale

Idle SHOULD require choke until the beast is actually fully up to temp if things are adjusted well. Sounds like you're right on th' edge of as PERFECT as it gets!

If after a good romp it still wants choke, raise the needles an eighth of a turn, do a plug inspection.

Don't get too worried about an occasional pop if the choke is involved, either.

Look for loose vacuum hose if it will only run well with choke on AND if as Doc says, it is FULLY warmed up. That indicates a LEAN mixture, but nothing you should have done with the shaft would cause that. Is the vacuum line to the dizzy connected?

If the carb adjustments and timing were fine before you removed the rocker shaft, they will be fine now.

Ok-update

After 20 minutes in the garage at 1000 rpms with 3/4 choke,
I pushed in the choke and the idle fell to 500-600.

Oh BTW: I have the air cleaners off in case I had to mess
with the carb mixture.

I'll set the valves again cold and then retune the engine.
I'm thinking I'm very close to back in the stretts.

thanks all, snooze time.
