looking for speedo pinion gear

This is a follow up to my original post regarding speedo operation. It turns out that my speedo pinion gear has failed (it turns freely in the transmission). I can not find one anywhere. Can someone help?

I'm gonig through all my old transmissions right now trying to find one - I'll look for a second one.

Atlanta Imported Auto Parts. Just type speedo pinion in their search box.

Search MGB auto parts

I put a new one in my tranny two years ago. Thought I bought it from Moss. Guess I was wrong?

Thanks, but I struck out with the Atlanta shop. Seems he has some for overdrive and other variations, but not what I am looking for. I may have found one at the MG Shop in Phoenix.

Paul,

I had finally found a repair shop nearby who said he could help me out. After receiving the part, supposedly for a late gearbox w/out OD, I found out that the gear in my gearbox did not match the one he sent. He sent one with 26 teeth and mine has 30 and is slightly larger diameter.

Your reference to Brit Vic, page 132, is for an earlier gearbox with OD. Is it your feeling that this pinion will match the one in my gearbox?

Sorry I didn't get back to you as I've been out of state for a while. If your gear has 30 teeth, I'm at a loss as to what will work. 20 and 21 teeth are the only ones I've seen. I don't know how many teeth are on a "D" type OD unit, but I'm sure someone out there knows. Make sure you check back with Tony. If anyone can help you, he can!

Thanks for the response.

I have had the transmission worked on many years ago. Is it possible that the shop replaced my MG transmission with one from another car make/model as a drop-in? Note that I am talking about a non-OD transmission.
