I think I know the answer to my own question but I thought I would bounce it off you guys just to make sure. I just finished installing new thrust washers, big end bearings, timing chain, and tensioner into my '76 1500. I'm using Castrol 20W50 oil. My issue is that my oil pressure keeps falling and falling the further I drive it. When it starts out the idle oil pressure is 80psi. As the engine heats up the pressure falls to about 45psi at 160 degrees. I have a 160 degree thermostat in the engine right now. After about 5 miles I'm looking at 20-22 at idle. Yesterday, I took it out for 10 miles and by the time I got home it was 15 at idle? I shut it off and coasted most of the way down my street. I think I'm facing a complete rebuild but wondered what everyone else thought. I haven't done a compression test lately but it was only about 125psi a few hundred miles ago. The oil doesn't really smell like gasoline and I don't think it is having trouble draining back to the sump cause you can let it idle for 5 minutes after a long run and it stays right at the same pressure. I'm wondering if an oil cooler might help but I don't think it could do enough at this point???
