I didn't realize the 4's dash was 2 pieces

You are correct. Mine will not be original, instead I am using L/R matched burl. (My overall restoration plan is to keep the car original, unless where reverting to original is easy - such as the dashboard veneer. The original needed replaced, I found the two sheets for $9, they looked beautiful, so I went for it. Similar will likely be an electronic ignition... easy to revert back, ASFAIK.)

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

Thats the one I am getting I hope. It looks like those are the same headers as mine?I'm liking the way that looks!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

By the way Tom, Don't try to install the engine with the starter on it already. Don't ask me why I know this!!

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

Sorry Tom. I got off on a tangent there! Back to you and the veneer....

I am making plans to re-veneer a dash. Wondering about good experience with any of the many veneer suppliers. Things like product quality, were they willing to work with you to get what you wanted, how the product was packaged and condition when it arrived, Anything else that you liked about them. Oh, and which company was it.

Thanks for any help.

Tom,

The Triumph Stag Club USA uses

Nice job Randy!!

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

I almost did not even post this topic thinking that there were probably not many that replaced the veneer. I have been pleasantly surprised.

Randy, it is beautiful. Hope you do not mind my repost of your pic. I did some work on it so the grain shows better.

Why did you need 2 pieces?

So there is a join somewhere in the middle of the dash? I thought you used a single sheet and then cut out the circles for the gauges etc...

If there is a join does anyone one have pictures of how they did it?

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

Get the checkerboard and set it on the diagonal for a racing flag look

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

the best way to install the veneer is using a vacuum press, I used my vacuum sealer by tillia and it worked really well if you have one or know someone that has one, the bags come in a roll so you can make a bag long enough for the dash to fit in, I put a piece of thin plywood down then parchment paper then the dash with the veneer glued to it veneer side down, make sure you do the glove box door at the same time, you can cut it out after the glue dries slide it in the bag and vacuum seal, then the hard work starts cutting the holes and switch holes out, take your time, I used quilted walnut and it chipped easily hope this helps

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

Thanks Hondo, I used to work a lot with exotic woods and know what you mean about how it can chip out. Thanks for your tips about the vacuum process, I have a nice pump that I use for other purposes that will work well.
Where do you get your vacuum bags?

Randy, you can save that pic and use it however you want. Glad to do it for you.

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

I buy my bags at costo but I think target has them I would add pics but I cant get the files small enough to post

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

Hondo,

How big are these vacuum machines? Are they small workshop compatible or do you need a full sized shop for having one be effective?

EDIT: It was dumb of me not to ask. Can you post a picture of yours?

Re: Looking for good experience with veneer compan

actually they are made for vacuuming food and they work great, I have frozen steaks for over a year and they taste like you just cut it from the cow, sorry vegeatarians but also worked for vacuum pressing

lets see if I can post some pics now and thanks tom for the link
