Looking for a quiet muffler

Hello all

Had the TR6 out on this chilly morning.. it sounded different, and, sure enough, the muffler is rusting away. There is a hole in the center of the muffler about the size of a half-dollar. I am looking for a replacement, something quiet, any suggestions??

Stock sounds about as good as it gets, for a quiet muffler, IMHO. Why not justreplace the original? Maybe get stainless steel this time?

Stock would be great. Could I get one at TRF, Moss, Victoria British, or just go to Midas??

yes. your choice. but if the muffler has a hole, the pipes may also need looking at too.

unless you like the sound of a aftermarket muffler (ROAR!!)then there are many choices /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif really just preference /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
I'd go to the place that gave me the best warranty on the replacement and if you don't want to get dirty under the car, installation by a pro as well.
 
Yes, but unfortunately it comes with either a header installation or a hole in the stock muffler.
 
Go with a name brand stainless stock system from one of the big British car vendors and have it professionally installed. It will last forever and only add resale value to your car.

Bill, I've got the SS Sears version muffler installed in 1986 with a lifetime warranty. The pipes coming back are SS as well, but were bought from TRF way back when. I actually had to have a new twin intermediate pipe made up for the exhaust after I installed the Pacesetter headers. A local custom shop whipped it up in a few hours and had everything welded together, tight as a drum for about $100.

I can't wait to go back to Sears with the lifetime warranty when the muffler goes bye-bye.
 
I put a monza system and added a resonator up front, there is a long straight section that can be cut out, I used a cherry bomb about 22 inches long and I think it sound great but not too loud

Stebro... nice. Here is my very recent (this year) experience with Stebro of Canada.

I heard through several sources that they made an Ansa style (quad tips) complete exhaust system for the TR6. I called, and confirmed this and ordered a set. The order was not cheap. I was promised the exhaust in two weeks.

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months.. no exhaust. After three months, multiple phone calls, emails, excuses about customs and manufacturing delays. I informed Stebro that I was cancelling my order, then called my bank and had the charges cancelled. Three weeks later (a long time after he was told about reverse charge by my bank), I received an email telling me that the exhaust was in the mail. Three days later, I received two generic mufflers and two pieces of straight pipes. Needless to say, Stebro disputed the reversal, saying that they did indeed ship me the exhaust system. After a few calls to my bank, and after having to ship Stebro back the exhaust on my dime (later reimbursed by my bank), I was never re-charged for the exhaust system.

Based on this experience I could never, ever recommend a Stebro exhaust system to anyone.
 
I order stainless steel muffler and pipes from TRF. My local mechanic will install it. Still getting some driving in. Thanks for all the info and insight.
 
Just wanted to report that the new stock muffler and pipes are in, and they sound nice and quiet. Good call from the experts here, so thanks!

Had the TR6 out this weekend, unseasonably mild in New England, so why not??
