Looking for a Harley muffler

I bought a 1300 Hayabusa muffler off ebay for about 10 bucks in perfect shape. I need to make a flange and buy an exhaust gasket to install it. The Harley muffler looks like a much easier install.

I still find it hard to believe that Harley makes a muffler!!! Was it a option?? Never seen one on a Harley around here!

If you're joking, the disreguard this. If not, the have too and yes, each ine came w/ two and were real quite (for a harley). MOst folks had us cut the baffles out prior to delievery and re-jet the carb (way back then).

Yes, my sad attempt at a joke. When I was a pup I rode alot and we were constantly being harrassed by the law over noise ordinance's. Apparently everyones hearing is gone now! My wife says mine is!!

I have a couple lying around in the garage someplace if anyone is still looking...not show quality (may have a couple of scuffs or dings) but they work well!! I was even given a little Harley "badge" that will go back by the license plate above the muffler by my biker friends due to the Harley muffler!! They all love the car, call it a four-wheeled Harley and love that it is a 1275cc, wind-in-your-hair vehicle. I have gone on a few "runs" with them and usually run "caboose" to keep the SUVs from tailgating them!

I'll take one. How much you need for shipping to 39426?

Check your PMs!

Huh? Whadyasay?!?!?!?!?! :jester:

I fugured you were joking, but I didn't see the jester smiley. It wouldn't suprise me if someone thought that. You should hear some of the things folks around here believe!!!

My neighbor just hooked me up so I don't need one anymore.

Bit of a dumb question: Why a Harley muffler on a Spridget? any clearance/mounting problems?

Seriously - what's the advantage of using the Harley muffler? I've got a couple of Spridget mufflers lying around that I was planning on putting on our two BEs, but I'd like to hear thoughts as to alternatives.

And when I bought my Buell a couple of years back, the PO had put a Vance & Hines on it, then taken all the packing out of the V&H, then cut out the internals that supported the packing..... A bit of a pain in the butt getting the replacement bits (as well as a couple of sets of packing, trying to stuff the stuffing into the muffler without shredding it), but it sounds plenty righteous to my ears.

Availability, price, sound.
they're everywhere, they're cheap, they sound good

(but I never fitted the one I had so I don't know for sure)

They maybe louder or have a nicer sound, but what's it going to do to the HP? Is the original exhaust system tuned to match the engine?
These big bean tin exhausts on boy racers "hot hatches", most of them actuall reduce HP. They're just louder & give them the impression it's faster because it's louder.
I want to preserve all the HP I was given.
Has anyone got any Dyno figures?

I found the Harley muffler to be quite a bit less restrictive, and it may only be in my mind, but I think performance was improved!

My thought was since the output on the exhaust manifold I have is 2", I'd just do a straight 2" pipe all the way back and then step it down to the 1 3/4" input on the HD muffler. Since the stock exhaust is smaller (and had more junk on it) the new setup *should* be less restrictive all around...

Worst case scenario, I'll just take the rubber bumpers off to make up for the HP I lost :jester:

I wouldn't do 2" all the way back. You lose too much velocity IMO.

Reason to use Harley muffler is:

1.) CHROME !!!!
2.) FREE !!! ( If scratched off a wrecked bike)

Upon further inspection, it appears that they are restrictive as they only have a few small holes in the baffles. The motors they come off of are 1340cc's and it's exhast is put through TWO muffles. They would be an o.k size, IMO, if you used them as dual mufflers (too heavy) but that wouldn't be practical. They are rather heavy for they're size.

I plan on cuttin out the baffles and experimenting on resizing the holes to allow more flow but not a huge increas in noise.

They sound pretty nice as/is. I slid one on the open exhast pipe of my race car and it sounded good and not too loud.

I'll keep y'all posted w/ my progress. Might start tommorrow.

Might do a homemade "glass pak" w/ some fiber fax from an old kiln.

Hey all, if there any mufflers left over I would like to have one. how much to ship to 30134 thanks.

Looks like 1 7/8 is the best size hole saw and possibly 1 3/4 as an alternate. Local HW store is out, so I'll have to wait.

All you need to punch out the baffles is a long piece of rebar or even a long screwdriver. Try it out first with baffles in place before you punch them out. You may be surprised at the mellow sound. I'm looking for another Harley Muffler, bullet shaped, with baffles in place as Bugsy is too noisy to start up on Saturday morning and sneak out for coffee without waking up my wife. Even pushing him out of the garage and rolling down the driveway backwards doesn't work.

That just the center divider, not the whole baffle. I have considered doing that, but there is no appeal proccess for that. Once it's done it's done. You should be able to see straight through it once you punch that out, right?

If you cut at the end, the whole tube and all the guts come out and all you are left w/ is an empty chamber.

Which way did you punch it out? Did the center divider come out, or did you just knock a hole in it? This might be a better way for these cars as I.D would be correct.

Funny thing is, my tailpipe just separated from my muffler for the second time, so now I have to do something about it.

Well, got it done. I pushed out the center like Jim said to and I hate to say it, but he was right. It's definitly cheaper and easier. I thought it might be welded in but it's not.

Instead of just using adatpers, I cut the flange off and used my old tailpipe as part of an adapter as it will slide perfectly up into the muffler about 3" and then goes another 2" or so once it's convinced it needs to go a bit further. This gives it a perfect pressed fit and it appears it doesn't need to be welded in. I left it unwelded to see how it will hold in case another memember want to do it this way and doesn't have access to a welding machine. To go this route all you need is a 1 1/2" connecter and two clamps. Total cost was $7.25. Your tail pipe on the output side of the muffler will need to be in decent shape to do this.

I cut off the flange because it has an open hole for the balance tube....which you can also plug with the center baffle once you get it out. I used my 3/4 breaker bar to tap it out but you could use a wooden dowel or something else with a flat face so you don't damaged the plug. You may need it later to plug the balance tube or to reinstall it if you find it's too loud for your taste. Mark it's depth on whatever you use to remove it so you'll know how deep it'll need to go back in.

It has a nice tone. Not too loud. It might be just right. I ran it a bit but it's wet here right now. When cruising you almost hardly notice it. When you open it up it has a nice sound. It sounds like a sports car should.

At the store I was playing w/ a chrome dual tip on the end of the muffler and it looked like something for a Jag. I was tempted, but it was $15 and I wanted to see how cheap I could get it done. I was even able to reuse the hanger off of the old muffler utilizing the mounting holes on the new muffler, flattening out the end of the hanger and drilling a hole.

It looks like it was made for the car.

Glad it worked out. When I got the freebie muffler the center baffle was punched with a few holes through it. I didn't do anything other than mount it as pictured above on this thread. I did tack weld together the adapters after they came apart in a few weeks. If you don't have access to a welder a muffler shop will tack weld for a couple of bucks.

I've got a welder but I don't think I'll need to weld this one up, but the possibility does seem to exsist. The resonator was tacked to the pipe and now you're telling me you had similar problems so maybe these do tend to come loose after a while. The center of the muffleraccepts a 1 1/2" pipe perfectly with the last bit of it acting as a push nut where the end of the inlet cone is. I've read in sevral places where some turbo header applications aren't welded together but have a tight slip fit. The innner pipe is supposed to swell greater than the outter due to more heat and it seals the joint.

Once I tapped it home, it didn't move at all. It won't budge no matter what I do. It' looks allot cleaner too with an 1 1/2 inlet. What did you do about the balance tube port, did yours have one? So you left your baffle in, right? if you go in from the rear, it'll punch out clean. It looks just like a freeze plug.

Just got back from a test run. Definate performance increase and it completely changes the way I drive the car. I used to shift @3K, now I'm shifting at 4500-5000 w/o even realizing it. The car doesn't struggle on the upper RPM's like it use to. It starts to sound good @3500 and I just want to let her keep climbing. Gonna have to put some new rod bearings in as I have a rattle on first cold start. I know it won't last long if I start spinnning it up high like I'm tempted to.

I do miss the stock exhast somewhat as now I'm tempted to drive faster. :driving:

Great idea to go at the center divider Jim. I'm glad you said something. I just would have went the ole bone headed Harley way. :hammer:

Jim, I'm really suprised that the car wakes your wife up. What's you timing set at? If you have room, you might consider bumping it up a bit before you change out the muffler.
