GT6 Looking for a GT6?

It's not "ANOTHER" car.....it's a fully portable parts supply - it has one of EVERYTHING you could possibly need!!!

While we're on the subject of GT6s, I ran across this one on ebay, makes me really want one.

1965 GT6

I had a new 67, thought that was the first year they were made.

Remember that my memories are getting older too, but I am pretty sure mine had a three digit s# preceded by some 0's, the number seems tome to have been in the later 240's. The early number is why I wanted to keep the car but being a farmer with three kids made it impractical.

Wouldn't mind having another one but they have gotten so much smaller over the years.

1965 GT6

Yeah, thats where I discovered it. I wonder if it would have gotten more money if he were honest about what he had. There is no way that car is "original." And "1965"?!? That alone made me think this car was a scam. I bet that scared off some bidders. Really super nice car, but why all the lies? I mean my 67 and the 67 a few towns over both have commission numbers much lower than his, but somehow his is a 65? And a car that nice, not to have a reserve on it? Ive never seen a GT6 that nice go for so low. I mean, that seems to be what they go for, but honestly, those that do, aren't that nice of a shape.

Oh, and all these Brits are scaring me. I have a funny feeling that theyre buying up all the good GT6es out there and importing them back, leaving very little for us. But I did find the comment about a lack of replacement floor pans in the US very amusing. (was one of the first things we bought for ours)

I know a rather common thing in that era with foreign cars was that they were titled when they were sold not the model year. I have seen a few 240z's that were titled as 69's instead of 70's when they were actually released. Being that this wasn't one of the first couple hundred made I have trouble believing that that could even happen here and it would have been a 66 anyway. It is a nice looking car but who knows what is under it. Maybe it could have been a typo but I would bet it's more likely titled as a 66 spitfire. I sure hope whoever got it didn't really take it up the tailpipe.

I'm in the market for a GT6, and was watching this one on Ebay: it looked nice. I think it went for $7,800. I've not yet got a feeling for GT6 prices: they don't come up too often, and so far I've only seen dodgy examples, other than this one. What is the feeling about that selling point: about right, a bargain, over-priced?

Another question: for those that have sat in a GT6 and a TR6, is the legroom for the driver about the same? I found the TR6 a bit cramped, and am wondering if a GT6 would be worse?

Thanks!

Hi Julian,
I was 5'9" and 170lb when I had mine. I found it very comfortable and roomy at the time. Now I am still 5'9" but considerably heavier and have three vertebra in my neck fused. I would no longer even try to get in one. It is hard enough getting in my TR6 with the top up.
It was fun though. I also found it caused some confusion with the State Patrol. Like the time I was through the radar setup before the Trouper had a chance to see what kind of car it was. And a couple miles down the road when he was trying to find out how fast it could go and I explained that it kept up with traffic pretty good.

Its hard to say because youre dealing with a Mk1. I see a lot of Mk3s for sale, but it seems the Mk1 and 2s are hard to find, at least in decent shape. I mean I understand the Mk3s are newer, but come on! we're dealing with a matter of 4 or less years, and more mk1s were made than any others, yet you rarely see one. Spitfires are the same why IMO.

As far as price, from what Ive "read" this seems fair. However I dont know how many years ago this price range was mentioned. As far as ebay goes, one of any body style in good condition bids around this, but never makes reserve. They always have a reserve. Why? Well come on, its clear that a lot of money was spent on restoration, and for a show winning rare classic that is drivable, $7000 on any such vehicle is just a crime. I mean, thats one step away from having some idiots insurance company write you a check for $1000 because they totaled your mint condition car. Like you could replace it for that and in that good of condition. Thank god for collector car insurance.

Im pretty sure however seeing a mk1 or 2 be listed with a reserve many many times and finally selling for $13k. I think if you got enough people who wanted a GT6 together, you could see $15k for an excellent condition GT6. Thats why I plan on driving mine when I get mine running. I know as soon as local yuppies see this car they'll want one, demand will rise, and so will the prices. Especially if they find out how affordable they are! A lot of future checkbook restorers there will be! So get yours now! 5 years ago, not ever knowing what a GT6 was, if you showed me one in great condition and asked how much I thought it was worth, I honestly probably would tell you $50k+. I know that probably sounds silly, but thats what I would have told you.

I was driving a '64 TR4 that I had bought new when I saw the first full page ad for the GT6. They had the car driving along a coast highway I assumed to be in California. I thought it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. Then I stopped in at my dealer to gt something for the TR4 and they had the '67 sitting there. I knew at that moment that I was going to have it and a couple weeks later I owned the GT6. I made two mistakes, traded the TR4 in for the GT6 and in 1976 I sold the GT6.

I think you'd find the leg room comparable between the GT6 and a TR6. The bigger problem (as Tom mentioned) is gracefully entering and exiting. The sloping roof line coupled with its close-to-the-ground stance require one to get really-really low.

What ever happened to the prototype that was passed around the factory for years while they were deciding whether to go into production or not?
