Looking at Bugeye - any advice?

I was just at the super market and saw the Hemmings magazine with a picture of a Bug-eye on the cover. It is a buyers guide to the AH Bug-eye.

Froggari! Nice car, I've seen it. Sounds like a good price. Good luck.

Right! Some problems, tho - no latch or hold down for tilt front end, problematic, fit and finish not so good, extra items old and used such as tonneau, top, side windows, hardtop bad fit, just all and all kind of beat up. Speedo not working, weird other magnet on the driveshaft speedo hard to read. Does appear to be a fairly sound driver tho. I'd want to put a few thousand into it and not sure it's worth it. Close tho.

More like this is what I want! Now, I'd almost buy it without negotiating! :

1958 Bugeye - SOLD
1958 Bugeye

Bugeye For Sale
This car is a December 1958 built, 1959 registered Bugeye, VIN number AN5L8596. I have owned it since 2006.
It is 99.9% rust free, and has always been garaged by me, and also by the PO who bought it in California in 1976. The interior of the fuel tank is absolutely as new.
It is unrestored, with its original Old English white paintwork, and the traditional hand-brushed red interior of the trunk. There are several dings and scratches but nothing major.
1275cc engine/transmission from a 1974 MG Midget.
Front disc brakes from the same Midget.
SU Electric fuel pump with a fully electronic interior but retains the familiar clicking sound.
A set of original wheels and tyres AND as set of Aussie Minilite alloy wheels with modern tyres. The original wheels are fitted with Dunlop SPs, probably at least 30 years old, and should probably be used only for show purposes
3.7:1 final drive.
Tripod headlights.
A brand-new battery.
A large number of miscellaneous spare parts in boxes, which you agree to take as a condition of sale. This includes a Weber 40DCOE which I never fitted to the car, a complete front bumper, a very scruffy hardtop, and a soft top with the original frame. There are also a set of the attachable side panels but they are very deteriorated.
Yours for $9,000.
Located in Raleigh, NC. Buyer collects. Certified bank check only.

List Date: 4/30/2014

Now I have to find one near coastal North Carolina where the shipping doesn't kill me!

Amazing! In a half an hour I found 3 cars - one in Hendersonville, NC, one in Fleetwood, PA and one in Westfield, MA. Course I like best the one further away. But, all comparable, and all closer than California.

And, today.............one about 10 minutes away! Will have to go see!

I bought a similar Bugeye 6 years ago for $8000. It had good paint, a very strong 1275, front disks, no rust, a new interior and new top and tonneau. It took an additional $2000 to take care of all the bits due to sitting for so long (breaks, bearings, etc.). Even given recent appreciation, $10,000 is too much for a car that looks like it needs a lot (wiring, engine rebuild). I think your $8000 offer was OK. Good to pass on this one.

Don't forget to check for bondo/rust on the cowling below the front grille as you shop for others - common rust area.

These cars look better now than they did when they first came out. There is a beautiful one around here with a rollbar. I'm glad some people are still interested in these old timers. As my 85-year old friend Bob - himself a Model A Ford owner says - "There's a nut for every car".

The Bugeye was the featured classic car in the latest issue of Auto Week. They really have gained in value and are now well ahead of many American classic cars.
