Sounds like I'm better off using the existing transmission (which seems OK).

I DO HAVE AN ISSUE TO POTENTIALLY SORT FIRST. The VIN plate is missing which was known at time of bid. So the VIN # is forth coming, and as a hedge I was planning on using the body number to cross-reference the VIN in case anything so messed up in the process.

Well come to find out - and I'm an idiot for not confirming this ahead of time - the body numbers appear not to be certified by the Heritage Trust.

No problem, I'll use the old Texas Plate as my back up. Well, Texas evidential will allow a VIN look-up but not a license plate look up.

Uh oh....

The local seller (dealer) are good guys, but this is looking a bit more complicated than expected....
 
I saw an article on a MGB GT twin cam somewhere. It used the Miata motor and tranny. They are cheap, reliable, and probably already have the ac hooked up. Kent Prather this last year rebuilt a coupe with the B motor, 5 speed, and added AC. Really nice. Sveral things to dream about before you dive into your project. Good luck.
 
I was thinking that what should drop in there very nicely would be a sweet little twin-cam. I have been kicking myself since high-school (graduated in 65!!!!) that I didn't buy an A coupe with a twin-cam in it that I found in NW Pa.!!
 
The nice thing about putting a B motor in is that it will have a real rear main oil seal. You'll have to get the correct rear engine plate to match the A tranny. And don't put a Miata motor in it!
