Long but touching story

OK, that's *really* worth reading.

Great story!

Well worth the read. Dads are dads, moms are moms, and family is family. This tenet holds true worldwide. IMHO

Just spent some time with my 90-year-old uncle who was a Marine on Iwo Jimo...got a phone call Sunday nght, <span style="font-style: italic">"Tony, can you come over? I need to walk with you."</span>So, Monday morning we took off & just got back last night.

He's on his last legs...which are black as can be from, as he tells ir, <span style="font-style: italic">sleeping on Iwo's sands."</span> We talked about him & his life and me & my military career. He had some things of mine from when I was young that he gave to me, & wanted me to through his antique collection & pick something I wanted.

I couldn't do it so I told him I'd come back son with my pickup to make a decision....I think he knows his time is near....& I think my aunt knows also...she really looked bad...bet she'll go within a few months of him.

Sad.....

Ooooff. That's a window into some fairly depressing recollections, Tony.

So heartbreaking to actually see the deterioration. Hope they had a good run after the initial "baptism" of the war. A lot of my dad's pals and a few of my own went thru Pacific experience. A good friend left us last year who was on Iwo. He had his mom lie to th' recruiter about his age so's he could join, we met later after I'd returned from "our" war... I honor all those fellas. Tough bunch.

He was wounded & was awarded the Silver Star on Iwo....he has a photo of the flag raising that shows a bit more of the surrounding area.....he's down in a corner still firing his weapon while the raising was taking place!

And, yes, it did cause a couple of sleepless nights as 'Nam snuck back into my dreams......he's the last of that generation for my family....another old uncle & WWII veteran of the Navy died during Katrina when the hospital lost electricity.....and their youngest brother, a Korean War vet, has also died.

Guess I'll soon be next....bummer!

Tony,
I never thought I was getting old until I became the most senior member of my family. When all of my generation are younger or of a younger generation, well.......

Jim
