I lived in France for several years and became accustomed to the way the Autoroute is driven, and have driven that Autoroute all the way from the Channel coast to Monte Carlo. The last 100 miles have some of the most spectacular views on any road anywhere in the world rivalling Hwy 1 in California. And the final dip down into Monaco is the most scary set of hairpin turns down a 45 degree slope you could ever wish to drive.
The speed limit on the Autoroute is nominally 130km/h, say about 85mph. You will almost never find ANYONE going that slow, even in a tiny little sewing-machine-like car. Most European small cars have fairly long top gears these days and can do over 90mph.
Many drivers of medium and larger sized cars (compacts by US standards) sit at 160km/h (about 100mph) or more for hours at a time and the gendarmes take absolutely no notice. But if you sit for too long in the left lane, that is just about the only thing you will get pulled over for.
Les flics were probably genuinely surprised to see the TG guy driving the DB9 at only 130km/h.
Ben, c'est un Anglais! C'est normale, quoi?
