Anyone else run into this one with Windows Vista?. we got a new router, and now my lappy won't connect to the web. I connect to the router just fine, but no further. it lists me as "local access only" I'm typing this while running a cord to the router...... after doing a search, it seems to be a common issue with no real resolution.
I guess it's time to upgrade to 7... (Or linux!)
 
While I was a UNIX SysAdmin in a former life, I have been using Vista without problems for several years. Have you contacted your router's customer support? If it is new and supports Vista, they should be able to help.

Try rebooting the router.

Have you configured the wireless settings on the router? You may have to enter in the MAC address of the laptop to allow it through to the web.
 
Check the workgroup name, too. Older Win was "WORKGROUP" newer ones are "MSHOME".

It'll play Hades with access if differrent that the router's setting, no matter if your LAN is set for Class-C or DHCP...
 
Guys I have no clue what you are talking about. Well maybe I do somewhat. Husband just put in a router so that he could connect to his garagemajal but that didn't work so he had to get a 'booster' router. Long story short I just got a new puter and am having to go from Windows XP to Windows 7. Maybe I'm just getting old but I don't like changes. Have referred to Windows 7 for Dummies. I'm learning and I'm not a happy camper. Some of my old programs will not work on this os and I've had to upgrade. I still haven't got the TV/Radio to work yet. Might just have to uninstall WinTV-HVR and reinstall and if all else fails call for help so I can speak to an English speaking person that I don't understand. GRRRRR.

So - Good lunck with your router problem. If all else fails, call for help from the router people and pretend you are old and feeble...

Just a thought or was it thoughts. Crap - Have to get back to my Windows7 for Dummies class.

We bought a new cornfuser for the bride late last year.
Spetzel Deal from Dell, buy the "business" package, comes with XP installed and a 7 disc.
Nope.
Had 7 installed and no disc.
Found a new 64-bit XP Pro setup, wiped the 7, installed XP, and everybody is happy once again.

Locals who work at MicroSlime tell me 7 is what Vista was supposed to be, but I don't buy the glitz.
 
I'm old school - If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I am sure Windows 8 is just around the corner. Microslime can't make money if they can't 'upgrade' the system. They tack on a few dollars, change the screen slightly and make us learn new stuff. Doesn't make me happy.

Whoa I'm turning into and "I had to walk 5 miles to school, uphill....."

That was my conclusion on first Win7 encounter. I still prefer XP Pro, as 7 has too much of the: "protect us from ourselves" in it. Fine for end-(L)users, a real PITA for the admin.

At least with Win7 Pro you can VM it and run an XP environment for warez 7 won't run.

Built two boxes with 7 Pro x64 a year ago, spec's were that they had to run some "legacy" DBM (I suspect it was FoxPro based!) for a business up in Ohio. Intel i5 engines, Gigabyte MB's and they ran like scalded dogs. Put the VM warez from MS in 'em for the older proggies to run on XP. Worked fine for the DBM stuff and an older version of AutoDesk CAD warez. 7 is the first MS OS in a while that ~works~ like it should.

Still Hard wired... I got to get my Winders7 a-comin. I haven't had any extra time to take care of it yet.
The most recent time/ money sucker round here is a "free" hot tub that doesn't seem to run trouble free for more than a few days....grrrr. It's about to go.
 
Ben- don't know what brand the lappy is, but on my Dell there is a key function at F-2 that turns off the wireless connection; connect query will say local only. Stupid option IMHO!!!!!!!
 
According to the documentation Windows 7 ultimate edition has an XP emulation that you can download for free. Haven't tried it yet myself, but could be something to consider for your older apps.
