I ran across advertising for a product called Lizard Skin, which is a spray on ceramic insulating material which is promoted for reducing heat and sound transfer in hotrods and custom cars. Sounds like it could have applications in solving the notorious cockpit heat problems in Healeys. Has anyone had any experiece with it?
 
Rich, I have never used it, but I just thought it was coincidental that I just read an article in a restoration magazine in which a fellow was using it on the bottom of a '46 chevrolet that was on a rotisore.
 
Works great. There are two different versions. One for sound and one for heat. We used them in a '39 Buick StreetRod with a 455 CI engine and the difference is dramatic.

I'll be using it on my Bugeye project.
 
Does this stuff leave a textured finish? It wouldn't matter to me for areas covered by carpet or otherwise out of sight but I wounldn't want texture on the engine side of the firewall.
 
Yes, it leaves a textured finish. It is not a rough texture, but it is obvious. We tried to get it uniform so that it would look OK, but in the end we were not satisfied with using it on exposed surfaces. On the plus side, it is MUCH easier to get good coverage inside the cockpit and panels/carpets fit great.

The blurb on this side of the pond does say that you can sand it for a smooth finish, but at something like ÂŁ80 a gallon it seems expensive to put it on then sand it off !

And is only available in 2 gallon tubs

I think it is one color ... gray, but in the UK it comes in grey.

However, you can top coat it.

We didn't consider sanding it because we were not sure how well the top coat would hold. and... it is a little expensive to be sanding off.
 
Hello Anthony, the article I read about it said that they let it cure for 48 hours then top coated it with House of Colour base/clear. They were building a custom out of a '46 Ford. They actually meantioned that is was going to be driven and they wanted the underside to withstand nicks and chips but be the same colour as the top.
 
doesn't it requires a special spray unit? This stuff might be good right behind the firewall, above the heater box.
