While taking a walk here in Venice, Fl, a Cooper's Hawk flew into a tree, glared at use, turned away and swooped down to the ground grabbed a lizard and chomped away. People were walking on the sidewalk not 5 feet away but the hawk ignored them all. Coopers and Sharp-Shinned Hawks are fearless killers, eating many small birds. They love hanging around a bird feeder. It's like a cafeteria to them.
 
Bald Eagles are definitely a success story in the D.C. area. They were non-existent not too long ago. I've seen the ones in this camera in person when working at a country club just down the river from their nest. Recently, I recall looking out my office window one day and seeing a Bald Eagle fly by and thinking "Holy crap, that's a Bald Eagle". He (she) was on his way to Lake Needwood, where he had taken up residence. There is another one up near Boyds at the lake at Black Hill Regional Park. They are such magnificent birds. Whenever I see one, I find myself just stopping and staring in complete awe.
 
It is refreshing to know we can do stuff to help these guys, eagles are plentiful around here, even near town. Falcons used to be a rare sight driving, now all over the place. Had a owl size up my dog from 10' this morning and decide either he was too big or the flatulence condition too great to mess with.
 
Bald Eagles are fairly common down here in Florida. We see them while golfing or just driving along. Also many Ospreys and red-Shouldered Hawks.
