TR2/3/3A little adjusting screw tr3

Does anyone know about that little adjusting screw with the lock nut on the side of the wiper motor of a tr3 D2? Is that designed to put a little drag on the gear to slow the lash--- kinda like on the steering box?
 
I don't think it is supposed to cause drag. Lucas manual says "set so the end float is just sufficient to allow the shaft to rotate freely".
