Linux Fedora Core 6! Help, Help!!!

Just picked up a copy of Linux Fedora Core 6 and installed it in my laptop after removing windows. No problems until I tried to set up my Internet account. The system does not recognize my internal modem and I have a dial up account. I could hook up an external modem, but it's inconvenient for a laptop. It's a HP Pavilion machine but I haven't a clue as to what modem is in it. How, if I can, get Linux to recognize it? I've tried everything in the book of instructions to no prevail. There's gotta be a way! Help! PJ

"How-To's" for a "Linmodem" no help?!?

Doc, according to Fedora's information, the win modem seems to give many problems for Linux and they claim the win modem is in most machines. If it was a desk top there would be no problem. I'd just get a new modem for Linux. But, the modem for a lap top is probably much smaller and more specialized for a particular computer. You might know better than I about this. Do you think I can get a compatible lap top modem for my machine? So far, I like what I see in the Linux OP system as long as I can get it to work on a dial up line. Any clues? PJ

OK, I found the web pages for linmodems and compatibility charts. Now I have a week of deciphering some of the terminology. I thought I knew a little about computers. I even took a course once on writing C++. So now I'm back in kindergarten. Wow, what did I let my self in for? PJ

Yeah, it ain't for the Faint of Heart. WinModems (AFAIC) were a cheesy attempt to isolate us Linux devotees... but then I see Black Helicopters over th' hovel from time to time, too...

Bash (pun intended) thru the linux forums as well. There's a lot of clever folk gimballing thru 'em. linuxforums-dot-org is one of the better ones.

Any I.D. onna chip & its numbers?

you have black helicopters? You must be a higher profile risk than myself. I seem to have the white unmarked van problem...

That was over YEARS ago here!!! Back inna days of DOS 3.0x, BBS's an' PINE!!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I'm a PICO fan boi. VI just isn't 'intuitive' enough to know, if you don't use it all the time.

Good question Doc! I'll hafta look at the system files and see if it's in there. Who knows, maybe this thing can be reconfigured?? I don't have high hopes though. Going to see if I can get another modem for it too. Worth a try, even though it is a remote possibility.

Spec sheet for the make/model could also be of help.

Yup! Have to find the book. It's in my, very well organized files, somewhere. My wife used to take care of my filing system and now that I do it myself, I can't find a thing. I haven't a clue why, as I'm soooo organized. You know, all the piles are well documented.

Yeah... same system we use here at Chaos & Mayhem PTY. LTD. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif
