I have recently "acquired" several ummmm, older Pentium based computers. I would like to get them going and sell them. One runs WIN 98 and the other runs WIN 95. I have heard Linux OS will run pretty good on older machines. I was looking in particular at DSL (Dam- Small Linux). I know several of you run Linux based software on your machines so I was wondering, just how frendly is Linux. I don't want machines you have to type in code or do some funky dance just to work. I will admit I KNOW NOSTHING, NOSTHING (think Shultz) about Linux. Any help, advice, general bashing or just a smack on the head would be appreciated.

I haven't tried DSL. I can tell you that I'm impressed at how far Linux has come a long (user friendly wise) in the past 12 or so years I've been messing with it. I can also tell you that Ubuntu has been the easiest distro I've installed and setup. Then again, it's the most recent distro I've installed.
 
I tried Linux several years ago and really liked it. For me the only reason I did not move to it on my PC's is that the CAD software I require does not run on it. The day I do not need Cad any longer will be the end of MS for me.

I've played with Ubuntu a bit, and like it a lot as a general purpose desktop Linux. We use Suse on our servers at work, but those are straight up servers -- no end user aps at all.

Best way to try is just to pop one on to a box and give it a go. Nothing to lose!

This is true. Just wanted to see what everyone else had to say.
 
I have Debian on the machine upstairs.

The problem is that while as an OS it's pretty slick, none of the software I use regularly, nor any of the games I play are supported, so it's to all intents and purposes useless except as a web browser.

<edit> Actually that's not 100% accurate - software like Apache server and Eclipse <span style="font-style: italic">are</span> supported, it's just that I need to use other things at the same time that aren't.

If you just want to "flip" the things, fdisk the hard drives and let the end-user sort 'em out. Loading ANY of the MS O/S's puts ya in a pit... "R U Legit?"

Feh. Shovel any Linux kernel on 'em just to show they work. Take th' money then walk away.

DO NOT get caught loading MS without a license.

Consider it as running a car on "alternative fuel". :devilgrin:
