Driving around yesterday, I saw lines at a couple Cingular stores. One had close to a hundred people in it. It looked more like a soup line. Hard to believe these people would stand in line to “drop” a grand. Cuz I’d bet it’ll break the first time it hits the ground. Definitely scratching my head on this one.
 
Obviously the meds have now worn off from yesterday.

What do I see when I open the paper this morning; the Mayor of Philadelphia lined up at 03:30 Friday Morning to get his I-phone at 18:00. He was in line all day, apart from a couple of breaks when he got a publicly paid flunky to hold his spot.

He claims that he did all his work from his Blackberry while in the line; what happened to personal interaction? Last time I looked the murder rate was still skyrocketing. Philadelphia is the epitome of what the rest of the world's perspective is of a typical American city and he is lining up for a toy. One person approached him and said that as a public servant she would be fired if she left her place of work for something like that.

Aaargh - Still waiting for Scotty to beam me up, but until then, I must send Paris a message on her I-phone that I think she is a wonderful human being that we should all look up to.
 
Welp...glad its over. I didn't mean for this to turn into as much as it did - I still can't figure out what makes a single person decide they are a "line". What I saw in NYC was absurd, but then they also had hundreds of people line up to buy canvas bags last week too so - enough said /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
Only que I ever stood in was 'cause I was either coerced to do, or didn't SEE it 'til I was IN it. Most times it was 'cause I was in th' military and wanted FOOD. Can't visit a "cafeteria style" restaurant to this day because of it.

Wait in a line to be afforded the 'priveledge' of spending $500+ on a PHONE?!?! feh. Steve an' 'is iBois can sleep wid da fishes fer all I care.
 
No Iphone for me, Nope not even any kind of a cell phone, and NOPE I WON`T usualy answer the phone on the wall in the house {Unless I`m ecpecting a call}. My theory is, IF I WANNA TALK TO YA I`LL EITHER DRIVE OVER TO YOUR LOCATION OR I MAY TRY TO CALL YOU! {but don`t count on the call} I have a cd M.P.3. player in the M.H. and my truck. I burn cd`s off of my P.C. to play in them. SOMETIMES, I EVEN LISTEN TO THEM!

STAND IN LINE? DON`T BE ABSURD!!!

I can remember lining up--for concert tickets to see the Rolling Stones! In the days before on-line ticket sales.
 
Yeah, I was just going to say that I've lined up for tix to see The Who and Pink Floyd. If you have to ask why, you wouldn't understand.
Stood in line to speak with Phil Hill too. Worth it.

And yeah...I did Hands Across America. With my kids. It was fun.

I have a 30 gig iPod. Mostly used in the van when I'm traveling in areas where there is weak (or annoying) radio. I have a lot of pod casts from NPR plus classic rock on it.

The iPhone has a weak network right now. I'm happy to let the early adopters stand in line, buy it, and work out the bugs. If it's better than what I have, I'll consider it at some point.

The shows with "Ice Trucking" and "Alaska King Crab" rule!
 
I also lined up for the Who and the Floyd, so I definitely don't have to ask why; saw them both many times. Funny thing is that I can't bring myself to see the Who now as they are just going through the motions. I saw them a few times in the 70's (too young for the 60's gigs) and after the first post-Moon gig I felt that the spark was gone and I have never returned.

Anyway back to the geek thing. My newest toy, as previously posted, was a TomTom GPS and I have discovered many more Triumph driving roads (country - narrow and twisty) in the couple of weeks that I have had it.

P.S. The Philly Mayor is still getting roasted in the papers; today it is for buying a toy in a high profile manner that costs more than some of his constituents can afford for rent. Nobody complained when he was doing the Blackberry thing, because he probably didn't make a fool of himself in how he bought it.
 
Don't want to prolong this too much but I'll add another $.02 - several members of another forum flatly said they wanted one and were camping the lines because it was the latest apple product. They're self-proclaimed Apple junkies and have just about every Apple product available.

At least they have an explanation for the insanity /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
I understand it for something that is going to be a limited edition, but I don't think that is Apple's marketing plan for this one; more like a limited edition of 10's of millions.

OK, I'm done with this thread - hip hip hurray.

I am about to purchase a Garmin 680 GPS which also has a built-in MP3 player and will transmit to the car's FM stereo.

I plan to use the MP3 capability mostly for music, but also for listening to MP3s my favorite radio programs. It also has the capability to play audio books, which might be nice on long road trips.

I wasn’t very happy with the FM transmitter I bought for my Zen. I could choose from 16 channels that all produced static and the fidelity suffered immensely. I wound up with a hardwired adapter that inserts into the antenna. Much better sound quality.
 
I've not heard any complaints about the FM transmitter in the Garmin, but I have been asking around on other forums about that very issue. I do know the garmin can transmit on almost unlimited FM freqs - which ever happenes to be clear of radio. Of course using the FM transmitter is optional - it is also bluetooth enabled and could link to blue-tooth headsets, for example.

I have an FM modulator hard wired into my Grand Am for the iPod and I am very happy with it (I prefer stock car stereos). However, I just bought an inexpensive FM transmitter (GE branded) for use with other radios and when I drive our minivan. I popped it open and added an 8 inch long external antenna {just a pigtail soldered to the internal antenna). The transmitting distance went from a reliable 10 to 15 feet to almost 200 feet clear view and 30-50 with obstructions. Eats batteries, though.

I am loading up some Dragnet, Aldrich Family, and Fibber McGee for a long trip this week.
 
I've never figured out why folks will go to great lengths just to get a phone or video game. The cell phone hawkers in the malls hate me because I have a 6 year old phone whose battery still holds plenty of charge. They come up to me and insist on selling me some "flip" phone with some ridiculous number of minutes, unlimited weekends, unlimited text messaging, and yadda yadda. I politely tell them I use my phone maybe 100 minutes a month, tops, I've never sent a text message, I'm only paying $29 a month (nobody offers a rate like that anymore), and I don't have to flip open my phone to use it. But they insist I'll save money if I go with their $39/month plan. Uh huh.

Needless to say, I don't care if the iPhone does all the things it does. I'm one of these weirdos who actually uses his phone to make phone calls. I use my digital camera to take pictures, I listen to MP3s on my MP3 player, and I surf the web on my computer. So there.
