Line flaring question...

When flaring a soft metal line to be coupled to a AN-Fitting (3/16") can you get by with using a 45 degree flare, or is a 37 degree flare a "must"?

Trevor, it's best to go with the 37Âş flare. However, a 45Âş will "work" in a pinch. If all you have is the 45Âş tool, why not change to the proper fitting? 37Âş flaring tools can be a bit pricey.
Are you working on the brakes? If so, go with the proper match.

Brakes? Amen. The 45 will sorta-kinda "fit". Not properly for braking system fittings.

And be visually critical: inspect the flares carefully for hairline splits.

A friend of mine did a emergency clutch line repair and the autoparts store only had a 45 degree flaring tool. It has been working fine, but he was wondering if he should take it off and redo it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks guys, that's kinda what I thought.

Feh. Clutch line... Same reply as them other two ol' fogies. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Along this line I have to ask..

A I am changing from the stock gearbox to the Taylor box; the Taylor box does away with the traditional clutch slave cylnder.

Does anybody have a good source for braided hose and fittings? (AN3 at the gearbox, but I am unsure what size we have at the clutch master cylnder)

Any thoughts on making my own hose or buying a premade hose?
(I have not had any AN fitting experience until now)

On my car I bought a braided house at a local speed shop and they matched up the fittings for me. I think they used a male AN-3 fitting to seat into the bubble flare seat on my stock clutch MC and slave cylinder.
