Light Bulbs

Mercury? That is some very toxic nasty stuff! Its a wonder "THEY" would let a product contaning Mercury into the hands of just anyone.
There are many environmentally consious people in our sociaty, but then again there ARE those whom would just toss these bulbs in the trash once rendered inoperable.
I.M.H.O. Mercury needs to be classified as a controlled substance.
Here is a site that sells energy efficient flourecent bulbs AND claims they are environmentally safe!

I. A 9 years my butt, I've had two go in in about a year and I've replaced them with the old normal type....
I have also rarely had one last for more than a year.
It is worth noting however that if they stay cool (literally) they will last much longer. That is why they will last longer if they are base down.

By the way those compact bulbs only have about 3-5mg of Hg. almost nothing, batteries used to have that much!

incourigible? Is that like a pain, yep guess we are. That's what happens as you get a few years on ya.

Y'know, over in Ft. Meyers Fl. at the Edison house they have a bulb still workin' that was one of his prototypes!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

I haven't used them yet (those new bulbs), but have also heard complaints by some about the yellow cast they have...

And I've also heard that they may not work very well with my old antique lamp (ca. 1930's), that these new bulbs don't screw into the old sockets or something like that.

Here in Canada they just announced plans today to discontinue all sales of old-style bulbs within four or five years

I find they are ok for some applications and not for others. The work find for my small table lamps in the living room, for example, but for my main overheads, I have to have the regular lights. If I were you I'd start hording light bulbs now! (I will refrain from expressing my opinion on Canada's mandate, save to say that I do have an opinion).

I recently got ticked when the bulb in the LR blew for the 2nd time in a month and bought two 5 packs of them to replace the standards bulbs. I didn't like that the two lamps with the fluorescent bulbs had a bluish tint while the other two had a yellow/brighter light. So, I replaced the other two so it wouldn't be so noticible. But it wasn't bright enough to read by so I bought another lamp to set by the chair.....now calculate...I have two lamps burning instead of one to have enough light to read by....am I still saving money?

and now I find out I'm potentially contaminating the local landfill too! Blah!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/pukeface.gif

That's a private page Sherlock, it won't open.

There are a bunch of different brands and types of CF Bulbs that have different color temperatures. Some of the "hobby" bulbs are closer to daylight than others, but they're not much good for anything than a small desklamp (great for viewing pictures though). I switched over to CF bulbs because I like the daylight balance, no other reason (hint hint, ahem).

Here's an article about the RF noise they put out sometimes, and you get to see the guts of one, oh boy! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

The problem I have with the whole compact florescent thing is the government mandate end of it. Call me goofy, but I say let the market decide. If the advantages actually come to pass (cheaper in the long run), people will choose.

Actually, I'm looking forward to LEDs becoming more prominent. I think CFs are the interim technology and LEDs are the technology of the future. Again, let the market decide.

Could be, but I don't think it's been on continuously since it was made.

This bulb has been on continuoulsy since 1901 at the Livermore, CA firehouse. It's only been shut off two or three times. Once during renovations, and when they moved...total time, about two weeks. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

What's the government mandate end of it? I didn't know there was a gov mandate.

Hey, good luck on your 1/2 marathon! I'm training for a full marathon coming up in June (how's that for hijacking a thread!)

Cheers,
John

I'm supposed to be the lighting guru at work, aside from the
rest of my duties, two years ago we did a lighting "upgrade" from
T12 bulbs and ballasts to T8 bulbs and ballasts. We were getting
2 years out of our T12 bulbs with a failure rate of about 15%.

Now we're experiencing a failure rate near 50%, and a degradation
rate of about 30% per year. In other words, the bulbs are
failing faster, and we lose light output from the bulbs at
nearly twice the rate as we did with the T12s...

Edit bit here...

We relamp every two years, we have 1400 2 lamp fixtures,
300 3 lamp fixtures, and 275 two lamp fixtures. We *HAVE*
to recycle all the lamps, I sell them on craigslist for a
quarter a piece... No, I don't ship them...

End edit bit...

Here are a few links about proposed measures to outlaw incandescent light bulbs:

As for the half marathon- I'm on track. I actually ran 13.5 miles last Friday...but injured my aleft achilles doing it. The race is May 5th, though. I'll be fine by then.

Good luck with your marathon. That still seems a ways off to me.
