Slave's Letter

Saw that yesterday. Touche', Mr. Anderson!

Wow, 32 years as a slave.... I had no idea people were indentured for that long. Sad, but GREAT letter!

I thought that the slaves in this country were slaves for life- I didn't know that they were ever freed.
This guy (Mr Anderson) could have been a TV writer now- he was good!

That's funny. "Thank George for me for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me."

That text appeared in several newspapers back in 1865, as well as Mrs. Child's book. Some feel it was an effort to build support for the Freedmen's Bureau, created by the Reconstruction Acts for education and resettlement of former slaves. Those Acts and offices were nearly eliminated in 1876.

Here's the New York Daily Tribune of August 22, 1865. Note the letter was dictated by Mr. Jordan, not written by Mr. Jordan.

The notable lack of anger or hatred is amazing, considering.

Almost Zen-like: he's now found peace in his freedom.

Sad, and facinating. :yesnod:

I was thinking the same thing. I can say for sure, I wouldn't have the same attitude.
