I'm thinkin' no one is lookin' forward to that
particular ride more than...........Tinster is!!

Thanks for the confidence one and all.

A couple Hail Marys might help as well.

Does anyone have a decent spare diffy they might
part with for a reasonable price? PDO Pedro's
clunks pretty loudly on shifts. The Crypt Car's
ace in the hole I/m afraid.

Are you sure that it's internal (gears) and not a cracked bushing on the housing?

Replaced the bushings the 2nd month I owned the car;
trying to rid of the clunk. Everything has now been
replaced except the diffy itself. I think the pinion
gear is shot.

Beautiful TR6. I love the color...

The soft top has a broken zipper on the rear window (open) and we removed it to fit everything in the car for the ride home. I've got to get a replacement for next spring.

Is it ever too early for a TR6 (factory) hardtop anyway? I wouldn't have bought a TR6 that didn't come with one. I love the look with the hardtop on.

Good point, as long as it's the factory top.

No flames here, it's JMHO!!!

I do over 100 miles of pleasure driving on the typical weekend. This last weekend was the British Motoring Club of Northern Colorado's Oil Spot Rallye. The clubs preminet event and I racked up over 140 miles on just the rallye.
2007OilSpotRallye001.jpg

Including an inspired John Buffum like jaunt on a short stretch of dirt (back tracking shortcut) where we were privileged enough to see a Lynx run across the road in front of us.

I'm in for the "Exorcism of Cryptie" run.

More likely thrust washers, IMO.

Sorry, no spare TR6 diffs. Not that you'd want to pay shipping to PR anyway; those things are heavy !

Diff clunk is as Randall said: most likely thrust washers.

Doc,
Please explain how thrust washers in the front
of the car are able to yield a heavy clunk from
inside the differential?

I'm confused on that one.

Thrust washers and main bearings are heavy duty
repair engine work, yes?

Diffy's got 'em, too!

Common problem on B fannies. Good place to start...

Mebbe on a B wot's gone 500K miles! Rarely have I had to do a diff rebuild on a B for lash problems due to wear. They're REALLY under-stressed. If the lube level is maintained and it is run regularly they should last forever. Only bad ones I've evere seen have either been ill-attended (seals left rotted, fluid deprivation) or abused severely (racing).

Mind yer tongue, Bro. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

...now Spitfires onna third hand, well... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

As does the gearbox. Common failure there too, at least on the TRs. For the Stag, they upgraded to thrust bearings and they hold up much better.

In the vast majority of the time, when the pinion gear goes, you Know it. Clunking is usually the taking up of freeplay in the gear train. The vast majority of the time it is the sidegear shims worn out. They are located in the actual differential assembly, the spider-sidegear cage.

Any good differential repair shop can replace them. With the diff on the bench it is less than a four hour job to replace all three seals, open up the case and rebearing and reshim it. The longest time consumer is to reset the pinion crush sleeve to the proper setting.

That's one of the items Ben is gonna check out tomorrow
when he wakes Amos up and gets him out in the street
for a drive. The solid CLUNK in the diffy but no other
noises.

Ben's thinking the BCF Run for Amos will happen sooner
rather than later. I plan on racking up the 500 miles
required to rechristen- "Amos" beginning Friday.
