Greetings Again,

I came across a LL wood steering wheel while at my local junkyard a while back. I had to pull the steering column out to get the wheel mount off, so I now have two columns for my 65.

My question is this, has anyone done a restoration on a wood steering wheel? Mine is very spongy and brittle. I have looked on the web, and came across some wood restorative stuff that sinks into the fibers and hardens, but I was hoping someone out there has restored a wheel in the past.

Many of 'em. Used Gorilla Glue or Elmer's and small band clamps for wood repair (suitably padded), clear epoxy resin or fiberglass resin for the finish coats. Usually two or three with a 1" paintbrush. #600 wet-or-dry to smooth it down and rubbing compound to polish/finish.

This guy is good. I had another site that showed in detail how each of the pieces are are cut and them laminated to the wheel.
 
Thanks all. That is a lot of work to rebuild a wheel. I guess with the right tools, and time (knowledge helps too) one can do most anything.

I am hoping to retain the original wood, so I think I may give the epoxy a go.
