MGB-GT Length of front springs.

I'm putting together another front end for my '67 GT. There are a few front ends sitting around here so I am gather up as many parts that are good enough for powder coating and noticed something. All of my front ends are from CB cars. All of my springs are different lengths. When I did the front end on my roadster last week, I just used two that were similar in terms of height. These were at least 1 1/2" shorter than the ones I have on my bench right now. The springs on my bench are the original ones from my '74 and seem really long. I have another set from a 74 GT and these are long.

Was there that much of a difference in spring length when they were manufactured and what is the stock length of a front spring?

It's just odd to see 10 springs on my bench with all different lengths.

Front springs were of different length depending on whether they were early roadsters or early GT's, mid roadsters or mid GT's or late roadsters...I've identified 6 different length front springs in my collection of old springs.

The Moss catalog lists 4 types of front springs. Roadster to 293445, Roadster from 293446 on, and two for the GT.

Holy cow. I think I put early front springs in my roadster.

So about what length are springs for a '67 GT? I'd like to have them powder coated as well but want to make sure I have correct lentgh.

Was the diamter of the bar used different and what size is std?

I know too many questions!

Not to hijack too badly, but I have a spring question too...
I have a set of 1976 front springs, will they work on my 1977 car?

Kenny - yours is easy - YES!

I know Moss lists 4 but I have 6 different ones!

Well here is what I have. Starting at the left.

The two left springs are from a 1976 MG truckload of parts I picked up. These are 10.6" long.

Two red springs are from a friend who brought them over for my '74 roadster front end swap. When I saw they were so long compared to the 9" ones I used, and as long as the ones from the '76 parts car I assumed that they were also from a RB car. He claimed he never owned one. These are 10.4" long.

Next two I just pulled from my roadster (I added the 9" springs I had from a free early front end I picked up. They were shortest) These are 10" long.

The single black spring (I can't find the other)is 9.6" long. Not sure where I got these. Oh I remember. This is from the other '67 special up at my moms. The other is up at her house I believe.

Lastly are the springs I just took off of the '74 GT parts car front end I just disassembled. They are 9.4" long.

There is a 1" plus difference in these springs. I'm going to use the '74 GT springs in my '67 unless I hear that they should be shorter. The '67 GT has a nice low profile and I want to keep it that way.

Oh the other thing I noticed is all the springs are .5" diameter. The last 2 from the '74 GT that I want to use are .55"

Go get the other black one and use those.

Wish it were that easy. I need to have this stuff gathered to go over to the powder coater tonight.
