TR6 LED Headlights Thouights?

While I am sure it's been covered, a quick search didn't uncover what I was looking for. Simply, does anyone have LED headlights installed and, if so, your general impressions? I know all the benefits, just looking for some feedback. I think almost as important as the added light is the relief on my headlight switch on my TR6. Many thanks.

+1 on adding a relay to do the switching. I don't have LED headlights but I did switch to halogen headlights and they are far superior to the stock incandescent ones.

I guess TR6's don't have a headlamp relay? TR4s didn't and I added a pair to eliminate the tendency for the switch to double as a hand warmer. Later I went with LEDs.

One big advantage to the LED headlamps - I usually drive with the headlights on in the daytime and the draw is so small (about the same as a brake light) that the generator can keep up.

Re: LED Headlights Thoughts?

No, the 6 didn't come with a headlight relay which, of course, is part of the desirability of LED's because the load drops from about 5 amps to just over 1. This would be a welcome gift for the switch. I can easily add a relay but try to resist making such mods unless absolutely necessary. I suppose my main question is; how did you find the cosmetic switch going from the warm glow of period correct incandescents to the stark white of LEDs? Thanks.

I didn't find it offensive, if that's what you mean.

Re: LED Headlights Thoughts?

One of my original headlights burned out and I replaced both of them with halogens. Straightforward job except for those %^&*# headlight rims. One was easy. The other one took me 20 minutes of cursing before it finally hooked on. You nay think you have it but hit a bump and the rim flies off. Stick with the ones with the screw on the bottom.

Re: LED Headlights Thoughts?

Been there.....And those rims aren't cheap either.....

Have you changed out the dash lights from 3W to LED. Much better a night Taking out the Tac get to them pretty well. Madflyer

Did you have an issue with the dimmer or bypass same?

Yes I remover dimmer all together. My TR 6 1973 key switch under steering wheel went bad so I removed it also and replaced ign. switch in that space in dash parts from Summit. Locking steering wheel junk any way. If I could post pic on Thread would show same I am still new here. Madflyer

Thanks. I know we're off the headlight topic now but one last question; where did you find the LED dash replacements?

A company called Litezupp has everything you need. Bulbs are drop in replacement and it means you get to keep the original switch. If you change the blinker bulbs to LED you need a different flasher which they have. I have bulbs from this company in my cars along with the rest of my club. The owners are LBC people, one owns and drives a 3 and a 250, they understand the cars and what they need.

For me that is a drawback. The main use of my headlamps are daytime driving (long 2-lane highways in the desert) and the white of the LEDs is harder for oncoming drivers to pick up than the yellowish look of incandescents. Still, I'll stick with the LEDs for the other advantages.

Re: LED Headlights Thoughts?

Thanks. The information is appreciated.

This original thread is about four years old, but there have been some major improvements in LED headlights that fit a TR6 -- and the prices appear to be dropping to reasonable levels. So, I am thinking I might just move to the "Light Side." Would like to see what those with much more experience have to say about the Litezupp LED headlights (L7C-H43G-R or the newer L7C-H43G-S models). On one forum litezupp was recommended so would be interest if anyone has tried either of these. Thanks

I am just now changing from LED to halogen. I bought a set of LED from a British car supplier at a good price. They probably were not very good. They did not focus a beam well to align them and I thought I got very inconsistent results. I have taken them out and am replacing them with halogens and relays to take the load of the headlight switch. I can't comment on the halogens yet as I have not driven it yet with the new lights. I got the Toyota kit that was recently discussed on the TR6 forum. Bruce

Hope someone has given the Litezupp units a try and can report their findings. Really would like to move over to LED headlights. Have replaced all other inside and outside lights on my 6 with good results!!!!

I did put LED lights into my Morris 8, 1936. The main reason was the generator only put out 8amps. Someone had already done a conversion in the buckets to hold a more modern bulb, so the conversion was easy. As stated above, the lights were more broad, less focused light, but actually worked better than original for the MOrris 8. We drove it around Pacific Grove during car week and a few times at night!

PS: Litezupp is advertising in our Car Show in two weeks. But I don't know much about them.

I will probably pull the trigger before then, but if you get a chance to chat with one of the reps, would like to see a demo and get opinion on two models. Appears the use the same bulb in both models - they just have different lens curvature. How does that impact light pattern???

May try giving them a call this week too.....
