Any tips on getting the plug to not leak? I was thinking of using teflon tape on the threads but are there any other methods thats work? Rest of the engine is dry and I'd like to nix this one.

my garage floor thanks you.

A copper washer should do the trick. It will crush down and conform to whatever inaccuracies exist in the casting. This is the way most drain plugs work.

Teflon tape as you commented is also good in this application.
