TR2/3/3A Leaky Steering Box [TR3A]

Everything went smoothly. I don't know why I was so intimated by that darn stator tube, 3 screws and 4 wires and out it came.
Reassembly as soon as hubby rebuilds the box.

Pics with a disclaimer... Not for the feint of heart

I'll have an after shot if I can get the darn front gasket to stop leaking. :wall:

Thought I would just support what everyone has said. My friend had the same issues with his steering box. It was leaking and had way too much play. The leaking was resolved by replacing the lower seal on the steering box. The play was a result of worn silent block bushes. Once we replaced the silent block bushes his steering was spot on. Oh, also check the tie rod ends. If they are worn you will get play there too. Good luck.

Good luck! The wiring throug hthe box is interesting.. Our Volvo's have a similar set-up but there's only one wire for the horn, which unforunately, often gets cut/broken when the steering coupler is replaced.

Ya know... now would be a good time to test/clean that radiator... :yesnod:

Thought about it, but since she generally runs cool and doesn't leak, I'd better not touch it. Only time the temp guage creeped up was during the inaugural Jim Thorpe Classic run when we sat in that awful traffic entering Jim Thorpe.

Yes sometimes the front gasket is a real bear. Make sure that the metal piece is not warped from over tightening; they bend a lot easier than they look, perhaps because the piece has five holes in it. I tried to fix one once and could not get it to stop leaking then I finally looked closely at the end piece and could see about 1/8 of inch warp!!!. Anyways Indian head gasket sealer works well there also because you can put it on the screws and the shims at the same time. I heard a guy once suggest using a thin bead of silicone on each shim and bolt also, and I think that should work too.

She's finished. The one leak that may return will be at the end plate, where the stator runs thru. It appears that the aluminum insert in the end plate is not willing to holding oil without some unattractive sealer slathered around the exterior. I'm guessing something with that endplate is slightly warped.

Thanks to everyone's help.

Perhaps the cover is warped as SP53 experienced. His suggestions were good ideas to staunch the leak. I also understand that the Penrite steering box lubricant is much ticker than gear oil, more like grease. Perhaps is also a solution to the leak.
