If the plate was designed to use the 1275 cover there a slightly recessed ring around the oil pump cover hole on the side of the plate facing the engine as 1275 oil pump covers are inserted from that side and RTVed into placed, where 948 covers are soldered on the flywheel side of the thinner 948 backplate. if the Datsun tranny cover was made for the 1275 cover then the 948 cover will have a bit of wiggle room when mounted on the inboard side, which is ok, as long as you get it postion correctly. The main issues here are to effectively cover the oil pump and make sure you clear the flywheel.
Bill can you elborate on this, do the Paul A plate have the recessed ring on the inboard side?
If so, I think this is the route I would take (mounting the cover form the inboard side, if it possible to just RTV the cover to the flywheel side of the plate and still have flywheel clearence, that somewhat alarms me because over time if the cover could just fall off and with the flywheel spinning and make somewhat of a big ole mess.
I think if this kit is continues to be made, then the oil pump cover needs to be adressesed in the instructions, sure for someone like mayself and others who have worked with many of these engines it seems very obvious that the oil pump has to be covered, but as this thread proves, new folks dealing with these engine may not see the obvious, because all this is new to them, hey we learn and thats part of the fun of it.
